Property Description

Volunteer Hostels is a social business that works to build a more equitable society through responsible tourism.

Based on a qualified volunteering model we team up with our Foundation (FEM: which has been working with afro and indigenous communities in Cartagena for 7 years) to provide technical capacity to the communities who need it the most.

We offer a nice, clean, safe, comfortable and meaningful accommodation experience in a privileged location inside the walled city.

Four things make us unique:

1. Real Social Impact: By staying with us, conscious travelers like you contribute to the financial sustainability of FEM (25% of income and 12% of the hostel's profit are used to support FEM's operation and projects' expansion).

2. Location: Our privileged location in San Diego neighborhood, in the heart of the mystical walled city, allows you to be safe and at a walking distance to every spot in the city.

3. Facilities: Every room is equipped with comfortable beds, A/C, free WiFi and a locker or closet to store your belongings. We currently have:

o 2 shared rooms: where you will meet new friends to explore the city with. One of them accommodates 7 people and has a private bathroom. The other one accommodates 8 people and still has the original walls from 400 years ago, which gives it a magic atmosphere.

o 2 private rooms: where you will enjoy a calm and quiet ambiance with your couple or a friend.

4. Everything you need in the same place:

• Meet: Share a beer with new friends on our patio’s parasols, read a book on our hammocks or have a free coffee on our social room while you meet fellow travelers and volunteers.

• Have fun: Take one of our non-conventional Insider Tours that will allow you to merge with the authentic local culture and explore the unseen Cartagena (#RutaChampetúa, #EnTuSalsa, #DrumSafari, #BazurtoMarketAdventure, #RutaZenú, among others)

• Taste: Cook your meals and store your food at our ample kitchen or delight yourself with caribbean or vegetarian food in one of our neighbor restaurants (conveniently located on our street).

• Shop: Buy one of our local-made souvenirs to support the communities we work with.

• Work: Check your e-mail, attend that Skype call and get your work done at our calm and fresh (A/C equipped) co-working space

• Get involved: Meet FEM’s staff and volunteers! We’ll be glad to show you what we do so you can get involved or spread the word.

I loved volunteer hostel! It was my favorite hostel of all the 3 I stayed in my trip as whole. I would (and did) recommend to friends, and will definitely stay there again if I go back to Cartagena. Everyone who works there is incredibly nice and welcoming, the beds are comfortable, the shower is good, there’s AC in the room, you don’t have to pay extra to use a towel there and it just feels like being home. It’s not a party hostel, so if you’re just looking for a place to rest, it’s perfecto!

Cute little hostel in the old city of cartagena. Very simple, has everything needed, not much more. Helpful kind staff =)

I enjoyed my stay a lot. The staff was very nice and I had the pleasure of talking to them quite a bit. The restroom was not great, but apart from that I had a great time! I'm only sad I couldn't see the sloth. :(

The staff were super nice and helpful, and offer access to a lot of tourist activities in the city. The location is perfect. That being said, the rooms were super depressing and smelled permanently damp. Not too big a deal - aircon works great, so if you only plan to sleep here, it's a solid deal!

Room was small but comfortable. Kitchen was very basic. Not a lot of atmosphere. Friendly staff. Good for one night.

    Very Good

I stayed at Volunteer Hostel because of its connection with FEM. I think it’s really great that they are helping fight inequality in education. The staff are really friendly and helpful. During the day, when people from the foundation are in the hostel, it felt weird to come and go. The hostel space is quite small and because of the age of the building, the facilities are dated.

Friendly English speaking reception staff who can help a bit with booking tours. Great location. Bathroom facilities are very old and run down. Having the sink right behind the toilet so you have to lean over an open toilet bowl is pretty disgusting. Kitchen has mostly everything you need but is often occupied by the charity members, sometimes to the point where you can't really access the kitchen for a whole evening. Good beds, but not really the atmosphere for backpackers.

Good location my room had a/c but it was only turned on for 1 night. Strange atmosphere as there were people filming an interview and people working on laptops most days. Different staff told me different things about tours like the price, it included snorkelling making it very confusing and me paying for something I didn't actually get. Quite disappointing. Also the cat kept getting into the room and on the beds.

Worst hostel I’ve stayed in. Booked a private room expecting privacy. However the rooms window backs on the court yard. No privacy blind is used, and the windows are paper thing. I could hear someone chew their food it was so thin, and could see people even with the blind down. Hostel was full of workers, no one to socialise with. Workers were having loud conversations until 12am. Initially booked 3 nights, refund was given for 1 and lost 1 night as I couldn’t bare to stay there.

We were excited to stay here and support the local charity but left disappointed. Suggest donating to the charity but not visiting. Our complaints include the following, the room smelled like cat pee, we heard mice scratching in the ceiling, there were mouse droppings in the outdoor shower, and the patio reeked of outdoor fish.
