Surrounded by the Aravalli Mountains and both natural and artificial lakes, it's no surprise that Udaipur was once the seat of India's Mewar kings. This city of fairytale facades understandably bears the name of 'Venice of the East'. Behind grand palaces, the old town is a maze of narrow lanes tumbling down to the shore of Lake Pichola. Once you reach the water, calm descends and visitors can enjoy leisurely boat rides past the Lake Palace.
Most travellers come for the views, so many hostels in Udaipur have terraces looking out over the hills or the water. For the ultimate vista, have dinner at one hostel's rooftop restaurant or book a room in an exquisitely restored mansion. You can even stay in the former Royal Boat Chief's residence right on the lakeshore. For a more low-key Udaipur hostel, look for a tented bungalow with a lakefront swimming pool. Many Udaipur hostels have free Wi-Fi in the social areas if you need to catch up with family back home.
Jagdish Temple is at the centre of the Old City. Here the winding streets buzz with locals and visitors getting to know each other over Rajasthani cuisine or strolling past the vibrant bazaars. As you approach Lake Pichola, you'll pass the City Palace and former royal districts. For walking paths, water sports or just a cool breeze, head to Fateh Sagar. This artificial lake is surrounded by hills and forests and is popular with day-tripping locals.
You'll catch glimpses of the Lake Palace hovering over Lake Pichola all around the city, but get closer to admire the semi-precious stones adorning the walls. History buffs shouldn't miss a day trip to Chittorgarh Fort. The 7th-century fort is known as the biggest in all of India. There's plenty to do within the city limits, too. You can spend a day browsing crafts for sale at Shilpgram Village, a vast living museum. A Thali cooking class is another way to dive into Rajasthani culture.
The best way to reach the city from Maharana Pratap Airport is by prepaid taxi. Udaipur is also well-connected to cities like Delhi, Jaipur and Indore by daily buses and trains. When travelling by bus, you can choose between local services or deluxe coaches with air con. Most major attractions are walkable within the city, so much so that walking tours are popular. To get to Fateh Sagar Lake and other sites farther off, it's best to hire an auto rickshaw.
