Summary of traveller reviews

The West Side YMCA in New York boasts an unbeatable location, right by Central Park and close to subway links. While many find the rooms basic and some bathrooms could be cleaner, the excellent location and helpful staff are frequently highlighted. It's a functional base for exploring the city.

The place in general is nice, the rooms need to be updated and the “corners” in the rooms need to be brought up to date…the place is amazing and deserves a facelift (the rooms)

If you just need a short stay in Manhattan, the YMCA delivers. The front desk folks were super welcoming and kind, and really cool while you stay there you have access to the Y's facilities like the gym etc. A con is that again, it's a hostel and things are a bit worn (ie the desk was in rough shape with some baked in coffee stains), and not everyone follows the rules ( the Scots had spontaneous drunken singalongs late at night), but overall is worth being in that area and great people there!

The best thing about the winter freeze in February 2026 was staying here. Great location. Safe neighborhood and located close to the subway.
