About

Generator Amsterdam is a design hotel-hostel located in the heart of the city, overlooking Oosterpark. Guests can choose from shared dorms to private rooms, offering something for everyone. Housed in the former zoological university, Generator Amsterdam has transformed the original space creating an auditorium bar, library and basement nightclub. Complete with 24-hour reception, free wifi, cafe, and bikes available for hire, Generator is a fun and affordable choice in Amsterdam.

The Generator Amsterdam Reception is open 24 hours a day with a duty manager always around and happy to help. It has flexible and spacious social areas, filled with creative design touches like glass-fronted elevators, a raised cafe and an outdoor terrace. We have turned the former lecture hall into an impressive chill-out lounge and bar, while the old library is now a relaxation and private events room, and the basement and cafe are now dining destinations.

Stay connected with free Wi-Fi and share those holiday snaps. In need of some clean clothes? The laundry is open 24 hours for washing, drying and ironing. A secure luggage room gives you more freedom to explore Amsterdam bag-free! The best way to explore Amsterdam is definitely by bike. Luckily for you, our hostel provides Vanmoof bikes for rental. Ride your bicycle along cafe lined waterways, visit the most creative shops around De Pijp or just kick back by the canal and try a few cold Dutch beers. It's pretty hard to get stressed in Amsterdam, but having a good time is easy.

Summary of traveller reviews

Generator Amsterdam offers a vibrant atmosphere in a beautiful park setting, with friendly staff and clean rooms. It's well-connected by tram, though a walk to the city centre is required. Some guests find rooms a bit small and note the lack of a communal kitchen.

Truly an awful experience. I arrived and my assigned bed was taken, staff refused to help me, and no one was in the room to discuss which of the other 3 beds I should take. Then they rented me a bike with a damaged chain. They refused to refund me or give me a new bike saying "it apperas to be fine". The staff will always smile while never actually being helpful. They just push you towards the option that makes them more money. Not guest friendly unless you want to be upcharged every second.

The rooms were kind of dirty, staff were rude and people were not social at all. I tried getting a refund for my last few nights there after staying a day and they wouldn’t let me. There were two girls at the front desk who were very rude and gave me a hard time about not reporting issues earlier and made up excuses as to why the room was dirty. The sink was clogged, there were stains on the sheets and mattresses. If you have the money just go to a hotel.
