This hostel is absolutely amazing. It is the most beautiful hostel I have stayed in in the world. The staff are all delightful too, they were my family away from home. The only small pitfall is the location. French Concession is a more exciting area. But there are two subway stations a two minute walk away and some good restaurants close by so this didn't matter so much.

Stayed in many hotels and hostels around China. This is a good one. But as always, don't bother buying their overpriced food.

Like it here very much. Will definitely stay with Rock&Wood again when I visit Shanghai. :)

Had a very enjoyable stay of a week at Rock&Wood Hostel. Friendly, helpful staff were the icing on the cake of a hostel that provides great value for money. Overall the only things that could be improved were the lighting inside and around the hostel (it was too dark), and making sure the backdoor is not left open!

Nice clean hostel with very helpful staff. The bar/restaurant is convenient while the common lounge is very comfortable. The double room with a tiny window was dungeon-esque.

Stayed in private room. Drank cheap beer in lounge. Will recommend to others.

This was my roommate's and my first experience staying in a hostel - to say we were pleasantly surprised would be a huge understatement. Rock and Wood Hostel is absolutely gorgeous and extremely comfortable; it's impossible not to relax while you're there. Our rooms were clean and bright; we chose a six-person room, which was reasonably sized and very comfortable. Make sure to take advantage of the luxurious common spaces - you'll feel like you're at a 5 star hotel.

I guess the problem in china is they allow to smoke anywhere, so the whole place smell to cigar, beside that very convenient location and definitively good value for the money.

You'll probably leave this place frustrated. Frustrated that a place which could be brilliant is rather average. I'll explain: Some staff are great and others spend all day on their smart phones. Bathrooms are of good quality but are not cleaned adequately. There are plenty of (Western) toilets yet 1 toilet roll dispenser per approx 5 toilets (yes, you did read that correctly). A strong manager with a firm hand on the rudder could make this place great - but now it is just floundering.

Room 102 with King bed was very dusty and hairs were found in bedding. Also walls scuffed and pieces of drywall missing. Bathroom okay, but shower curtains had some mold. Air conditioner/heater works fine. Bed too soft, so hard on the back. Overall okay, but not great. Had that feeling of being dirty after having to wipe down surfaces, bed frame and lamps because of dust build up. We stayed in a hutong in Beijing before and it felt cleaner somehow. TV and kettle worked fine.

Best hostel I've ever stayed at. Simple as that. It's got it all. You could possibly say it could be more central but its very close to metro stations on good lines for getting in to the centre of Shanghai. I rearranged my trip so I could spend more time in Shanghai, partly because this hostel is so good.

Good hostel. The bar provides a meeting point for other travellers.

Nice, has good character and a lovely looking restaurant/bar with a nice patio. Friendly staff with good English. Very small room without natural light, suppose you get what you pay for. Gave a 10% YHA discount as opposed to some others in Shanghai which offer 10 yuan/night.

We have regretted that they don't give us help for our daughter who was very ill. They didn't give us names of hospital or doctor or .... Although our children who is 10, had 40.6° of fiever during the Night. And they don't enquire about her Health aftershave Night... What a Pity !

Owner Comment (Hide)
Hello, thank you for the valuable advice given, the first thing you asked me to apologize, we have on the matter related personnel to do a survey, we were very sorry that the staff did not understand what you mean, and do not know your daughter is sick, just thought you need to find a hospital for tests, anyway, lead to such a result we express deep regret that we will pay particular attention to future work, do not want to have a similar situation occurred.

The biggest issue with this hostel is its atmosphere. What they don't tell you, is that this hostel has many live-inns (Chinese and international people who are working at Shanghai). This makes meeting people hard since most guests already know each other. Chinese families also live here, with dogs that bark all the time. Also, the facilities are not very clean, and are absolutely sub par (laundry facilities are old, haven't had maintenance in a while, and they are pretty bad).

Absolutely worth the stay, it's so peaceful and nice, the beds were very comfortable and there's even people who just live there because it's so nice. 4 out of 8 people in our dorm had stayed there for at least a month. Some good eateries near by too.
