Hostelworld says

Sitting On The City Walls Courtyard House was rated the best in Asia at the 2008 and 2009 Hoscars and it's not too hard to see why; they're located in the very centre of Beijing next to Jingshan Park and the Forbidden City. One Hostelworld guest told us that their 'location on a hutong is an amazing way to see and meet Chinese people in a traditional setting'. This hostel is set in a stylish house traditionally-designed around a central courtyard. Their English-speaking staff are often praised for their eagerness to share their knowledge of Beijing.

Property Description

Set within walking distance of the Forbidden City, our hostel is located in the heart of ancient Peking.

This is an exquisite traditional courtyard house; reparation and renovations have been carried out in full accordance with traditional tastes and modern standard.

In our hostel you can find red lanterns, Chinese knots, a 100m² comprehensive functional public hall, free wireless Internet access, clean guestrooms, air conditioning, heating and big washrooms that conform to the European and American standards.

Here one can get in touch with ancient wisdom, modern life and the contemporary civilization of Beijing in close-up.

We’re located within an ancient urban town area, which is perhaps the most authentic old town in Beijing. We say that it is authentic, because in front of the gate there is a zigzag alleyway which is completely different from many of the beautiful hutongs that are currently being partially remodelled for modern living. It still keeps its original feel dating decades back to the great old Peking. No modern transport vehicle can pass through; one can only walk or use a bicycle.

Only one minute’s walk from the gorgeous traditional alley of Beijing Major Street, it gives you the most genuine understanding and feelings of hutongs in Old Town Beijing: the retired elders, basking and chatting under the sunshine; birds, congregating under the gate tower, chirping; Pekinese, tied on the wire pole; rabbits, kept in the cages; and also an old Hutong public toilet, which was built 30 years ago.

Sitting On the City Walls – it’s classic, therefore it’s modern. Enjoy the unforgettable Beijing lifestyle!

We look forward to your presence.

Sitting On The City Walls Courtyard House says

I think what really puts us ahead of the rest of the hostels around Beijing is that here you can mix in with local peoples everyday life and make some local friends. We're in the middle of downtown, just 10 minutes' walk from the North Gate of Forbidden City. I recommend that our guests visit the parks nearby and join the locals doing their morning exercises like dancing, tai-chi and more.
We cater to all ages, from 18 to 60.

Latest Review

" Stayed in a 8 bed dorm, but felt more like a 4 bed dorm since there were 2 sections of the room. You get a small locker for valuables, but anybody could walk into the dorm without a key. I think they were in the process of fixing the lock. Everything important was clean, except some minor details. The receptionist was fantastic; best in China I encountered. Friendly, informational, offers fair prices, and only hostel that gave us a free city map and printed directions. I recommend this hostel. "
