The sardine run

Moalboal is a laid-back town on the south-west coast of Cebu, and its strip of guesthouses at Panagsama Beach sits on one of the most remarkable reefs in the country. A few metres off the shore, a shoal of millions of sardines swirls in a living cloud, and you can snorkel into it from the beach.

Turtles are common along the reef, and Pescador Island offers some of the best diving in the Visayas.

Kawasan Falls, with its famous canyoneering, is nearby. Three days is right.

Where to stay

Panagsama Beach, a short strip along the reef, has the hostels, dive shops, restaurants and bars, all walkable. White Beach, a few kilometres north, is quieter with a sandy beach. Moalboal town itself, on the main road, is where buses stop.

Things to do

Things to do in Moalboal

The sardine run is Moalboal's unique sight: a shoal of millions of sardines lives just off Panagsama Beach, close enough to snorkel from the shore. Swim out over the reef wall and the water turns into a shifting silver cloud. Sea turtles graze along the same reef.

Pescador Island, fifteen minutes by boat, is one of the best dive and snorkel sites in the Visayas, with a wall, caves and reef fish.

Canyoneering at Kawasan Falls, in Badian, about thirty minutes south, is a classic half day: you jump from rocks, slide down natural chutes and swim through turquoise river pools, ending at the falls. Go with a licensed guide, early, before the crowds.

White Beach, north of town, is the place to swim and relax.
