Fort Kochi
First-timersThe old town.

Kerala's old port: Chinese fishing nets on the waterfront, Portuguese churches, a Jewish quarter and spice warehouses, with the backwaters starting to the south.
Kochi has traded spices with the world for two thousand years, and the Portuguese, Dutch and British all ruled it in turn. Fort Kochi, the old town, still has their churches and houses, alongside the Chinese fishing nets on the shore and a Jewish quarter around a sixteenth-century synagogue.
Kochi is the gateway to Kerala, with the houseboats of the backwaters to the south and the tea hills of Munnar to the east.
Two or three days in Kochi is right.

Kochi, on Kerala's coast, has been a spice-trading port for centuries, shaped by Arab, Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch, British and Jewish traders.
Fort Kochi, the old town, has the giant Chinese fishing nets on the shore, lowered and raised by teams of fishermen; watch at sunset. St Francis Church, the oldest European church in India, once held Vasco da Gama's grave. The streets are full of colonial houses, cafés and street art.
In Mattancherry, the Dutch Palace has fine murals of the Ramayana, and Jew Town, with its antique and spice shops, leads to the Paradesi Synagogue, built in 1568 and decorated with blue Chinese tiles.
In the evening, watch Kathakali, Kerala's dance drama, with elaborate make-up applied before the show, at a cultural centre.
The Kochi-Muziris Biennale, India's largest contemporary art festival, is held every two years in Fort Kochi's warehouses.
The Alleppey backwaters, with houseboats on palm-lined canals, are about an hour and a half away, and Munnar's tea plantations, in the hills, about four hours.
Fort Kochi's streets, the Chinese fishing nets and the beachfront are free, and so is St Francis Church.
Jew Town's streets are free to wander; the synagogue and Dutch Palace charge small fees.
Kerala food is coconut-rich and spicy: fish moilee, a mild coconut fish curry, appam with stew, and Kerala sadya, a vegetarian feast on a banana leaf. You can buy fish from the vendors by the Chinese nets and have it cooked at nearby stalls.
A meal is €2 to €6.
Kochi is relaxed at night; Fort Kochi has a few bars and cafés. Kerala's alcohol laws are strict, so bars are limited mostly to licensed hotels.
A beer is €3 to €5.
Cochin International Airport is about an hour from Fort Kochi. Ernakulam, on the mainland, has the railway stations and the metro.
Ferries link Fort Kochi with Ernakulam and Mattancherry; the Water Metro is a modern ferry system. Autos and Uber cover the rest.
Kochi is cheap. Dorms start around €6 and a careful day is €18 to €28.
A Kathakali show is €4 to €8, a backwater houseboat day trip €15 to €40 shared, and a ferry pennies.
The currency is the rupee (INR), at roughly 95 to 100 rupees to the euro; prices here are euro equivalents. UPI phone payments are everywhere, and some apps now accept foreign cards; carry cash for small shops, autos and markets.
Kochi is safe and relaxed.
