what can you buy with €1 around the world?

As low cost travellers we are always very careful about how we spend our savings, because every euro counts. But of course, depending on the country you’re travelling to, your currency will be worth more or less… With this in mind, we got curious and did some research on the cost of living in each place and what you could buy with €1 in different countries around the world. Here are the results:

• In Spain: you can eat a pincho in a bar or buy two cans of soda in a supermarket.
• In Italy: have an espresso coffee (0.80-1€) or make a wish by tossing a coin in the Trevi Fountain (0.1 cent-1€).

• In Belgium: you can buy a simple waffle (€1).
• In France: pray to find a vide grenier on your way, those second-hand markets with very cheap clothes, objects and books… yes: from €1!
• In Switzerland: a chocolate bar or 2-3 apples.
• In Sweden: not much you can do with 1€, luckily it’s free to take a breath of fresh air XD
• In the Czech Republic: toast with a beer.
• In Hungary: toast with another beer (or a glass of wine).
• In Croatia: with 1€ you can eat an ice cream.
• In Bosnia: eat a cheese burek (a savoury pie filled with feta cheese).

• In Bulgaria: have a tea and a baklava (0.60-1€).
• In Egypt: eat a plate of falafel.
• In Ethiopia: drink a fruit juice and eat injera (a kind of crepe) with sauces.
• In Madagascar: buy 4 rolls of toilet paper or drink a beer in a local bar.
• In South Africa: buy 1 tube of toothpaste.
• In the United Arab Emirates: you can get half a kilo of oranges or 5 eggs.
• In Saudi Arabia: fill up your motorbike with 4 litres of petrol.
• In Iran: buy about 3 litres of petrol or 1 fresh fruit smoothie.
• In India: with 1€ you can get your money’s worth eating a thali (0,40-1€) or have a few teas (chai) that cost 0-06-0,10€ each. You can also find hostels that offer dormitories for €1 or eat 5 samosas.

• In Sri Lanka: eat a handful of street snacks or take a 3-hour bus ride.
• In Thailand: drink a fresh fruit smoothie or eat a pad thai (€0.80-1). You can also buy a couple of 0.20-litre shampoos or a couple of tickets for the public boat.
• In Malaysia: have Tarik tea and roti for breakfast.
• In Indonesia: eat mee goereng at any warung (local restaurant) or go inside Bali’s Tanah Lot temple.
• In Vietnam: try the national dish, a noodle and meat soup called pho bo, or go to Hoi An and find little bars offering beer for €0.20. You can also buy a pack of cigarettes, although the soup is better!

• In Japan: go to a kaiten sushi and eat two pieces of cheap sushi or buy onigiri in any convenience store.
• In Korea: buy a beauty mask, a pair of socks or an underground ticket.
• In China: buy make-up at the silk market or eat 10 dumplings or xialong bao in street restaurants.

• In Australia: buy a chocolate bar or half a kilo of bananas
• In New Zealand: drink a Frozen coke at McDonalds or a mince pie at a bakery.
• In Argentina: eat an empanada or an alfajor, mmmm!
• In Ecuador: get 1 kilo of tomatoes or 4 city bus tickets.
• In Colombia: get a haircut at the local barber or buy a newspaper.
• In Brazil: drink a soft drink in a restaurant or buy 1 kilo of sugar and a 0.5 litre bottle of water in a supermarket.
• In Barbados: buy a 0.33-litre bottle of water.
• In Mexico: with 1€ you can buy 3 metro tickets or enjoy 2-3 tacos.
• In Cuba: eat 10 egg sandwiches or 2 plates of pasta with tomato and cheese.
• In theUnited States: eat a slice of pizza in NYC.
• In Canada: buy half a kilo of bread.
