Antico Spedale del Bigallo – Hospitality among history, nature, and sunsets over Florence
Nestled among olive trees in the Florentine hills, the Antico Spedale del Bigallo is a carefully restored 13th-century monastery where medieval charm meets modern comfort. Today, our hostel welcomes travelers seeking an authentic experience, breathtaking views, and moments of peace far from the bustle of the city.

Accommodation
Our shared dormitories, ideal for groups, friends, and families, can accommodate either five or eight guests. The rooms are furnished with beds inspired by Renaissance paintings, and each guest has personal storage space (locks available upon request). Shared bathrooms with showers are located on the same floor.
For a unique experience, try our alcove dormitory: twelve handcrafted wooden alcoves, each with two single beds, create a cozy and private environment inspired by the shelters of medieval pilgrims. These alcoves are arranged within a spacious and well-lit dormitory.
We also offer a female-only dormitory, reserved for women, with five beds, a peaceful garden view, and a private bathroom with shower.
For more privacy, we offer three comfortable double or twin rooms, each with a private bathroom and the option of adding an extra single bed. Our family room is perfect for small groups or families of up to five people. Sheets, towels, and daily cleaning are included in all private rooms.
A towel set is available for guests staying in dormitories, for an extra charge of €3.50.

Food, atmosphere and conviviality
Every morning begins with a classic Italian breakfast buffet. In the late afternoon, enjoy an aperitivo on our panoramic terrace, with freshly made cocktails, Italian craft beers, and non-alcoholic drinks served against the backdrop of the Florentine skyline.
In the evening, join us for “Pasta Time,” where we prepare simple, fresh dishes served in a friendly, communal atmosphere that feels like dining in a Tuscan family kitchen. Don’t miss our homemade desserts, lovingly prepared each day.

Activities and surroundings
Bigallo Hostel is a perfect base for exploring the scenic trails and natural beauty of the Tuscan countryside. The historic center of Florence and its landmarks, such as Ponte Vecchio (9.4 km) and Piazza della Signoria (10 km), are easily accessible.

How to reach us:
The hostel is located on a hillside approximately 25 minutes by taxi or private car from Florence’s central train station, Santa Maria Novella.
By public transport, the most direct option is the 23B bus, which departs from central stops such as Piazza Indipendenza or Fortezza da Basso. The ride takes about 40 minutes to the terminus (Croce a Varliano), followed by an uphill walk of approximately 1 km to reach the hostel. The final stretch is a 1 km uphill walk which offers a beautiful preview of the landscape surrounding the hostel.
We strongly advise against using extra-urban buses such as 351A or 353A, as they require different tickets, cost more, and are often a source of confusion for travelers unfamiliar with the regional transport system.
Travel times may vary depending on traffic and schedules. For up-to-date routes and timetables, we suggest checking Autolinee Toscane or using navigation apps such as Moovit.

Check-in hours
Standard check-in is from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM. A late check-in is available between 10:00 PM and midnight, for a supplement of €12. This service must be requested and confirmed in advance; we cannot guarantee availability without prior notice.
