Edinburgh Backpackers is a friendly spot for a trip to Scotland, spread across four buildings in the heart of the city. Check in is from 2pm, but no worries if you get here early – we'll keep your bag for free while you explore. Just ask at reception and we'll point you in the right direction for a free city tour. We've got a café and two common rooms for friendly gatherings – relax with a movie in the TV room, or unleash your competitive side in our games room. Pool, anyone?

Our rooms are in 19th-century buildings on Cockburn Street in the city's Old Town – known by locals for its quirky shops. Because of their age, there are stairs in each building, and no elevators. It's just a few steps from Waverley Train Station, where the Airlink 100 bus will drop you off if you're coming from the airport (it takes about 30 minutes). Stroll downhill from us and you'll be on Princes Street – the heart of Edinburgh's shopping area – in minutes. Wander uphill to find yourself on the historic street, The Royal Mile, with the castle at the top.

Rooms and Dorms

You can mingle in a mixed or female-only dorm, or treat yourself to some alone time in a private double, twin or quad. Pick a room with an en-suite for a little extra privacy. Our rooms have free linen, key card access and secure lockers (you'll need £5 for a deposit in the dorms, or £10 in the private rooms). Because we're on a hill, you'll get a great view across Edinburgh's skyline: perfect for a selfie!

Extras and activities

We're just up the hill from the Cowgate, Edinburgh's best nightlife street, so you won't have far to go for a pub crawl with your new travel buddies. With free Wi-Fi, you can share photos that'll make your friends back home wish they were out with you! Help yourself to free tea and coffee in the shared kitchen to help you wake up the morning after.

Most comfortable beds!! Fantastic location. Nice common rooms with board games and tv, easy to meet other travellers. No elevator so if you are staying on the top floor it’s a very long way to the top with your bag. Kitchen is well equipped but there are 5 fridges, only 2 are available for guest use and were too full to fit anything in. The laundry facility isn’t what we expected either, for £7.00 the staff will take your laundry and wash and dry it for you, but you cannot do your own laundry.

Great location, close to everything. Rooms are a bit older and expect to climb a lot of stairs. Worth staying for the location, especially over the Hogmanay festival.

It is a very typical large-size hostel. I stayed over at New Year's Eve and they had a minimum 3 nights rule and charged you for each of these nights with the NYE of >40 £. The rest is fees, fees, fees: for towels, Ridiculously overpriced locks, for leaving your luggage on the day of departure (!) etc. Would not have stayed there if the city wouldn’t have been fully booked.

Possibly the rudest hostel staff I have ever come past. Besides the Australian manager, every staff member was rude, inconsiderate and uninformed. They could not answer basic questions and treated us rudely. Assumedly all the workers were not employed, because they acted wth such disrespect. Really upsetting seeing as we had heard such good things, would not recommend staying here. Dorms were also squished and there was a lack of space. There was also a lack of female toilets on each floor.

Cleanness sucked. Bathroom was the size of a mini closet. Shower was either freezing cold or scolding hot. Lots of noise on first floor. Beds super uncomfortable. This was all for the twin private room and bathroom.
