Get a taste of the Caribbean life at Hostel Masaya Santa Marta. We've got two swimming pools, not to mention a chilled-out rooftop terrace with a barbecue and an on-site bar. The aim of the game at this cool colonial house is to get you involved in Colombian culture, so we put on activities like salsa sessions and empanada-making classes. With a mix of spots for lounging, partying and socialising (including a cinema and games centre with a pool table), you can hang out with other backpackers or just take it easy.

If you're flying to Santa Marta, catch a bus or colectivo (minibus) from Simón Bolívar International Airport to the city centre where we're based. Just look for one that says 'Centro' or 'Kra 5' and you'll be with us in about half an hour. South America's first cathedral, the Basilica of Santa Marta, is a 3-minute walk from the hostel. When evening falls, take the 7-minute stroll to Parque de Los Novios, a square surrounded by lively bars, restaurants and clubs, to experience the buzz of the city after dark.

Rooms and Dorms

Settle into a mixed dorm to really enjoy the hostel vibe. Each bunk comes with a power socket (handy for overnight charging), a locker and free linen. A curtain gives you that bit of extra privacy, and there's a fan to keep the air fresh. Private rooms blend hostel attitude with boutique hotel style. All rooms and dorms are en-suite and have air con – something you'll definitely appreciate during Santa Marta's tropical summer.

Extras and activities

Sway in a hammock with a novel from our book exchange or FaceTime friends back home using the free Wi-Fi. We've got a kitchen where you can make snacks – using ingredients picked up from our shop – and a café for hot drinks and treats. Our staff can arrange trips, whether to the Caribbean beaches of Tayrona up the coast or treks to the Lost City hidden in the jungle.

really awesome hostel to stay at. The rooms were great and the staff was friendly and really helpful. The pool on the rooftop was awesome and the bar was always full with people for happy hour. The location is great because it’s close enough to all the sites but far enough where you can get some sleep without it being so loud. Definitely will come again !

Loved the place. The staff made me feel so welcome as soon as I arrived. Also my roommates were the best and the free salsa dance night was fun. Amazing rooftop. Not a party hostel which i liked. The second night wasn’t as sociable cause there were no activities planned by the hostel, so i guess depends what night you come. Internet was also pretty good.

Great hostel with rooftop pool n great breakfast. Hostel is so big from the outside but the rooms are so cramped up. No space to keep ur back packs and the dorm feels a lil stuffy and suffocating at times like a den. May be they could have lil more space in the rooms. Staff was just okay doing their job. Over all good.

Stayed at Massaya for one night only but it was great. Spotlessly clean, great showers, comfortable bed with privacy curtain and individual charging ports at each bedspace. Air conditioning was great which is so needed with the heat. Would definitely recommend. Only downside was lack of equipment / utensils in the kitchen area which was pretty small for the hostel size. Reception staff were so helpful too.

Great hostel, staff very helpful and informative. Two pools is a nice touch. Bar and restaurant has great atmosphere on an evening with the planned activities. Food was really good and pretty good value. Our dorm was very cramped and poorly lit. Others looked much better. The bathroom had little ventilation and the bath mat looked like it had never been washed. Lots of hang out space, the roof is ace. Good kitchen. Overall pretty good.

This is more of a hotel than a hostel and lacks any sort of atmosphere to meet other travellers. The front desk staff is extremely rude and unhelpful. When asking questions about Tayrona park and how to get there. She, almost seeing happy, told us it wouldn’t be possible due to busy season and us not having advanced tickets. Again asking further questions about what to do we were brushed and she didn’t care at all about helping. Ended up going to a different hostel for info about the park.
