About Montreal

Montreal is on the Eastern side of Canada, in the province of Québec. It is located on Île de Montreal where the Ottawa River and St Lawrence River meet. There are several origin stories for the name of the city, one being that it came from the French given name Mont Royal, which became the variant Mont Réal, and finally Montreal. The city has also adopted nicknames such as “The City of a Hundred Bell Towers”, because of the number of churches; and “Sin City” because of its nightlife during the Prohibition era.

Hostels in Montreal are generally centrally located in the downtown district, in between the St Lawrence River and Mount Royal. They offer private and dorm rooms, unique decor, and exciting social spaces to make the most of your time in Montreal.

Hostels that are further east in downtown Montreal are closer to the historic streets of Old Montreal. Go North and the trendy streets of Le Plateau-Mont-Royal are right at your front door. Escape the concrete jungle in Mount Royal Park to the west. No matter where you stay, you’ll be in the perfect spot to experience everything Montreal has to offer. And you can't go wrong with the best hostels in Montreal!

Montreal has no shortage of things to do across its eclectic assortment of districts. Get a taste of the city's historic side by exploring old Montreal or even the 1976 Olympic facilities. The Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal and the Old Montreal Ghost Walk are a must! La Ronde is Canada’s second largest amusement park if you’re looking for an adrenaline rush, or chill out in one of Mile End’s hip cafés. Of course, you can’t speak about Montreal and not mention
the legendary nightlife, there’s something for everyone, from jazz to EDM to hip-hop.

Aside from being incredibly walkable and bike friendly, Montreal has plenty of other transport options to get you around the city. Buses are available all over the city by day, and after midnight there are still 20+ routes in service. You’ll also have access to shuttle services, including to/from Montréal–Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport. The Métro has four lines to help get you around too, and if you’re looking to get somewhere that the buses and trains just don’t reach, you can use the Shared Taxibus service.
