Fethiye town
ValueThe harbour and old town.

A harbour town on the Turquoise Coast, with Lycian tombs cut into the cliffs, boat trips to twelve islands, paragliding over the Blue Lagoon at Ölüdeniz and the start of the Lycian Way.
Fethiye sits on a sheltered bay on Turkey's south-west coast, where pine-covered mountains drop into turquoise water. It was the ancient city of Telmessos, and Lycian rock tombs are carved into the cliffs above town.
It is the backpacker end of the south coast, a working town rather than a resort, with Ölüdeniz, its Blue Lagoon and the paragliding off Babadağ mountain twenty minutes away. The Lycian Way, a long-distance trail along the coast, starts nearby.
Three or four days is right.
Stay in Fethiye town for value, or at Ölüdeniz for the beach.

Paraglide from Babadağ, nearly 2,000 metres above Ölüdeniz, and land on the beach; it is one of the most famous tandem flights in the world. The Blue Lagoon at Ölüdeniz is a sheltered bay with calm, clear water.
Take the 12 Islands boat tour from Fethiye harbour, with swimming stops in coves.
Walk to Kayaköy, a hillside village of stone houses abandoned when its Greek population left in the 1923 population exchange. Butterfly Valley is a beach at the bottom of a gorge, reached by boat.
Saklıkent Gorge, where you wade through a narrow canyon, is an hour away. The Lycian Way begins at Ovacık, above Ölüdeniz.
The rock tombs above town, the harbour and Kayaköy's paths are free to see, and the coast walks cost nothing.
At the fish market, buy fish at the central stalls and have one of the surrounding restaurants cook it for a small fee. Gözleme and village breakfasts are the other local meals.
A meal is €6 to €12.
Fethiye has bars around the harbour and the old town, and Hisarönü, above Ölüdeniz, is the package-holiday party strip.
A beer is €3.50 to €5.
Fethiye is walkable. Dolmuş minibuses run to Ölüdeniz, Kayaköy and Saklıkent. Dalaman Airport is about an hour away.
Buses run along the coast to Kaş, Antalya and Bodrum.
Fethiye is good value for the coast. Dorms start around €12. A careful day is €35 to €50.
The costs that add up are paragliding and boat tours.
The currency is the Turkish lira, and prices change quickly with inflation; these are euro equivalents. Cards work widely, bank ATMs are best, and always pay in lira rather than accepting a conversion.
Fethiye is safe.
Choose licensed paragliding and boat operators. The sun and summer heat are intense; on the Lycian Way, carry plenty of water.
Emergency number is 112.
