The city of three cultures

Toledo stands on a rocky hill almost surrounded by a deep bend of the river Tagus. It was the capital of Visigothic Spain, a great city of Muslim al-Andalus and then the seat of the Castilian kings, and for centuries Christians, Muslims and Jews lived and worked here together.

The result is a UNESCO World Heritage city of churches, synagogues and a mosque within a few streets of each other. The painter El Greco lived and worked here.

Toledo is half an hour from Madrid by AVE and most visitors come for the day. Stay the night to see the city quiet and lit up.
