About

YHA Hobart Central is one of the most central hostels in all of Hobart we are right opposite the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, one block from the Harbour and less than 10 minutes' walk to Salamanca.

Our staff hail from all over the world but have decided to call Hobart home and are more than happy to help you plan your island adventure. We know the best tour operators (hint: they're not all on Instagram) the secret spots, how to get there and how to fit it all in to your 5 day itinerary (because you probably thought Tasmania is just that little island underneath Australia, right?).

If you prefer recommendations for good coffee and amazing local produce over where to find the cheapest goon, then we're probably the hostel for you. We have regular activities that change with the season so make sure you check out our website to see what's on.

Reception is attended from 8am-10.30am and 2pm-8pm. If arriving outside these hours, please let us know in advance so we can arrange a self late check-in for you.

The staff were so lovely and helpful but the facilities were very underwhelming. The ‘common area’ had 2 sofas and a tv, and that was it. It was full a lot of time as it was very small. The WiFi kept cutting off too. The were no curtains on the bed and they were extremely creaky. The place itself all isn’t social at all, if you’re a social person, I would not recommend coming here.

About Hobart

The capital of Tasmania, Hobart – Australia’s island state, really brings the saying ‘good things come in small packages’ to life. From museums to picturesque mountaintop views, Hobart offers a variety of things to do. Spot a kangaroo or pet the Tasmanian Devil - which is much more pleasant than it sounds.

You will find a hostel in Hobart within 1km of the city, with the exception of a waterfront lake lodge located just under 5km from the town centre. Their coziness offers you the perfect opportunity to meet other backpackers, especially working holiday visa holders, as Tasmania attracts travellers from all over the world.

Most Hobart Hostels are centrally located, which is great if you plan on exploring the culturally rich town. If you’re a foodie, Salamanca is a great place to base yourself as it’s full of amazing cafes, restaurants and an epic market every weekend. North Hobart is perfect for creatives, as it’s where you’ll find the MONA gallery and its incredible architecture.

The town centre’s compact size makes exploring an easy breezy walk. Literally. Why not take a stroll through the town and explore its quirks and history? If you’re into festivals be sure to check out what’s on during the time of your stay, as you might just find yourself in the centre of the action at one of Tasmania’s biggest festivals, such as Mona Foma. Perhaps you’re one of ‘those people’ who like to collect country specific and unique mementoes that others deem ‘unnecessary’? Well get down to the Salamanca market on a Saturday. With arts, crafts, gifts, clothing and food on sale, we’re sure your heart will be content. If you’re looking for outdoor activities then hike up one of the mountains, chase the many waterfalls or opt to adventure to Bruny Island Lighthouse.

If you’re wanting to explore downtown Hobart or the waterfront, go on your merry way with easy adventuring by foot. When your feet get tired grab a Metro Greencard or buy a single ticket and take advantage of the buses around the inner and outer parts of the town.
