About

If you like things calm, friendly, and a little bit human, you’ll probably feel at home at Attic. Since opening in 2013, travellers from more than 140 countries have passed through — over 100,000 of them so far — and many leave us a little love along the way, averaging a 9/10 rating across 6,500+ reviews.

You’ll find Attic on the top floor of a heritage building in the heart of Auckland’s CBD, just around the corner from the Sky Tower, Queen Street, and everything you need when you first land in New Zealand. With 100+ beds across dorms and private rooms, it’s social without being overwhelming — big enough to meet people, small enough to feel familiar. Things are clean, calm, and well run, and yes, we’ve picked up a few Hostelworld awards along the way, including Most Popular Hostel in Auckland.

Attic is proudly locally owned by three friends who care deeply about the place and the people who pass through it. It’s not part of a big international group, and it’s not run like one either. That’s what keeps things personal, relaxed, and genuinely welcoming — the kind of place where decisions are made with people in mind, not policies.

This is the sort of hostel where you wander down the hallway barefoot, end up chatting to someone new, and suddenly you’re making plans together. If you’re heading out solo — to a festival, a walk, or dinner — chances are someone will invite you along. And if you’ve got nothing planned? That’s perfect too. Sink into the couch, put your feet up, read a book, or just enjoy doing nothing for a while. When you’re travelling, that feeling is gold.

Whoever you are, and wherever you’re coming from, you’re welcome here.
Because the best part of any hostel isn’t the building, the bunks, or even the location — it’s the people. The travellers, the staff, the shared moments and small kindnesses that make a place feel like home, even when you’re far from it.

“He aha te mea nui o te ao?
He tangata, he tangata, he tangata.”
— Māori proverb

(What is the most important thing in the world? It is people, it is people, it is people.)

Summary of traveller reviews

The Attic Backpackers in Auckland offers a fantastic central location, making it easy to explore the city. Guests frequently praise the friendly and helpful staff, as well as the very clean facilities and well-equipped kitchen. Some travellers note that rooms can get warm at night and that there's a lack of privacy curtains or personal lockers in dorms.

Great hostel in Auckland. Not super social but facilities were clean and the kitchen was well stocked. Lots of space for food.

I can’t say enough good things. The staff are super helpful. There’s plenty of places to hang out at in the hostel. The cleanliness is spectacular. It’s located in the heart of the city so most restaurants and offices are a short walk away. It is down the street from the UoA and AUT city campuses which makes it easy to find nice spots to study.

Lovely place to stay in the centre of Auckland. They have a really big and well resourced kitchen and loads of places just to chill around the hostel, making a really nice atmosphere.
