Golden Temple
First-timersThe old city.

The Golden Temple, which feeds around 100,000 people a day for free, the moving memorial at Jallianwala Bagh, and the border ceremony with Pakistan at Wagah.
Amritsar is the spiritual centre of the Sikh faith, built around the Harmandir Sahib, the Golden Temple, which stands in a sacred pool. Its community kitchen, the langar, serves free meals to anyone, of any faith, around the clock.
The city has a painful history too: the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919, and the Partition of 1947, when the border with Pakistan was drawn just outside the city.

Amritsar is the spiritual centre of Sikhism, home to the Golden Temple, Harmandir Sahib, one of the most moving places in India.
The Golden Temple, covered in gold leaf, sits in the middle of a sacred pool, Amrit Sarovar, and is open to everyone, of every faith, around the clock. Cover your head, remove shoes and socks, and walk clockwise around the pool. Visit at dawn or late at night, when the temple glows and the hymns, kirtan, are sung. The langar, the community kitchen, serves free meals to up to 100,000 people a day, cooked and served by volunteers; join the rows on the floor, or help peel vegetables or wash dishes.
Jallianwala Bagh, next to the temple, is the garden where British troops fired on an unarmed crowd in 1919, killing hundreds; bullet marks remain in the walls. The Partition Museum, in the Town Hall, tells the story of the 1947 partition of India and Pakistan through survivors' memories.
At the Attari–Wagah border, about an hour away, India and Pakistan hold a flag-lowering ceremony every evening. Since 2025 it has been scaled down, with the gates kept closed and no handshake, but visitors can still watch; arrive early and bring your passport.
The Golden Temple, its langar and its overnight pilgrim accommodation are free. Jallianwala Bagh and the Wagah ceremony are free.
Walking the old city's bazaars around the temple costs nothing.
Amritsar is famous for Punjabi food: Amritsari kulcha, a stuffed, crisp bread with chickpeas and butter, Amritsari fish, battered and fried, and lassi in giant glasses. Dal and roti at the Golden Temple's langar is free.
Kesar da Dhaba, near the temple, has served dal and parathas for over a century. A meal is €1 to €4.
Amritsar is quiet at night, but the Golden Temple is open and beautiful after dark. A few hotel bars serve alcohol.
A beer is €3 to €5.
Amritsar Airport is about 30 minutes from the centre. Trains reach Delhi in about six hours on the Shatabdi or Vande Bharat express. Buses reach Dharamshala in about five hours.
Taxis and shared jeeps run to the Wagah ceremony in the afternoon.
Amritsar is cheap. Dorms start around €5 and a careful day is €15 to €25.
The Golden Temple and its meals are free. A shared taxi to Wagah is a few euros, and the Partition Museum a small fee.
The currency is the rupee (INR), at roughly 95 to 100 rupees to the euro; prices here are euro equivalents. UPI phone payments are everywhere, and some apps now accept foreign cards; carry cash for small shops, autos and markets.
Amritsar is safe.
At the Golden Temple, cover your head (scarves are provided), remove shoes and socks, wash your feet, and do not smoke or drink nearby. Tobacco and alcohol are forbidden in the complex.
The Wagah crossing itself has been closed to most travellers since 2025; check the latest before planning to cross. Drink only bottled or filtered water, and be wary of raw salads and ice; stomach upsets are common.
Most visitors need an Indian e-Visa, applied for online before travel. Since 1 April 2026, all foreign nationals flying in must also submit the free e-Arrival Card online within 72 hours before landing; screenshot or download the QR code, as it cannot be retrieved later.
