Bali, twenty years ago

Kuta, on Lombok's south coast, is a small surf town surrounded by some of the most beautiful bays in Indonesia: Tanjung Aan, Mawun and Selong Belanak, white sand between green hills.

Lombok is less developed than Bali, with its own Sasak culture and a mostly Muslim population. The Mandalika development and its MotoGP circuit have brought change, but it is still far quieter than Bali.

Mount Rinjani, one of Indonesia's great treks, is to the north. Three or four days is right.

Where to stay

Kuta town, by the beach, has the hostels, cafés and surf shops, all walkable. The Mandalika development along the bay has resorts and the MotoGP circuit. Quieter guesthouses lie in the hills and bays around, such as Selong Belanak, a scooter ride away.

Things to do

Things to do in Kuta Lombok

Kuta, on Lombok's south coast, is a surf village surrounded by some of Indonesia's most beautiful bays: white sand, turquoise water and green hills.

Tanjung Aan, east of town, is a long curve of white sand with calm water for swimming. Climb Bukit Merese, a grassy hill above it, at sunset for one of Lombok's best views. Mawun and Selong Belanak, to the west, are quiet bays; Selong Belanak has gentle waves and is the best place on the coast to learn to surf.

Gerupuk, twenty minutes east, has several breaks reached by boat, from beginner-friendly to advanced. The Mandalika circuit hosts MotoGP each autumn.

Visit Sade, a traditional Sasak village with thatched houses, to learn about Lombok's indigenous culture. In February or March, the Bau Nyale festival celebrates the appearance of sea worms on the beaches.

Mount Rinjani, 3,726 metres, Indonesia's second-highest volcano, is a two- to three-day trek to the crater rim and the Segara Anak lake inside, from the villages of Senaru or Sembalun in the north.

A warung meal is €2 to €4.

Getting around

Getting around Kuta Lombok

Lombok International Airport is about thirty minutes away. Rent a scooter to reach the beaches, which are spread along the coast; there is little public transport.

The Gili islands are about two hours away by car and boat. Rinjani treks start from Senaru or Sembalun, about three to four hours north.

Costs

What Kuta Lombok costs

Kuta Lombok is cheap. Dorms start around €6 and a careful day is €20 to €30.

A surf lesson is €15 to €25, a boat to the Gerupuk breaks a few euros, and a guided Rinjani trek €120 to €250 for two to three days, including the park fee.

The currency is the rupiah (IDR), at roughly 17,000 to 18,000 rupiah to the euro; prices here are euro equivalents. Cards work in tourist areas; carry cash for warungs, boats and small islands, where ATMs are few.

Safety

Staying safe in Kuta Lombok

Kuta Lombok is safe, but there have been bag snatchings and robberies on quiet roads at night; avoid riding alone after dark. Scooter accidents are the biggest risk to travellers in Indonesia. Only ride with a valid licence for motorbikes, insurance that covers it, and a helmet; police checks are common.

On Rinjani, go with a licensed operator; the trek is hard and the weather changes fast. The mountain closes in the wet season.

Most visitors need a visa on arrival, best bought online as an e-VOA before you fly, and must complete Indonesia's online arrival declaration, All Indonesia, before landing; check the current rules for your passport.

Emergency number is 112.
