The city of consuls

Bitola was one of the most important cities in the Ottoman Balkans, and in the nineteenth century so many European countries opened consulates here that it became known as the city of consuls. That era left its mark on Širok Sokak, the long pedestrian street of neoclassical townhouses in soft colours that is still the centre of city life.

The Ottoman bazaar, with its covered market and mosques, is on the other side of the river. On the edge of town are the ruins of Heraclea Lyncestis, founded by Philip II of Macedon, with some of the finest mosaics in the region. Above it all is Mount Pelister, the country's oldest national park.

Bitola is relaxed, cultured and much less visited than Ohrid, an hour and a quarter away. Two days is right.

Walk Širok Sokak, the long pedestrian street of pastel townhouses, cafés and people-watching, from the clock tower to the city park. Sit outside with a coffee; it is what the whole city does.

Cross the river into the old bazaar, with the Bezisten, the covered market, and the Yeni and Isak mosques; the Yeni mosque now houses an art gallery. The Church of St Demetrius has a fine carved iconostasis.

The Bitola museum is in the old military academy where Mustafa Kemal Atatürk studied, with a room dedicated to him.

Heraclea Lyncestis, about two kilometres south, has a Roman theatre, basilicas and remarkable floor mosaics of animals and plants.

Pelister National Park, above the city, has hiking among Molika pines, a species that grows only in a few Balkan mountains, and two glacial lakes known as Pelister's Eyes.
