The gateway to the isles

Oban is a small Victorian resort on a sheltered bay on the west coast, and the busiest ferry port in the west of Scotland. From its harbour, CalMac ferries sail to Mull, Coll, Tiree, Barra and South Uist, and day trips reach the holy island of Iona and Staffa, with its basalt columns and Fingal's Cave.

The town calls itself the seafood capital of Scotland, and the fishing boats land their catch on the pier. Above the harbour, McCaig's Tower, an unfinished Roman-style folly, has the best view in town.

Oban works as a base for two or three days of island trips.
