Port and La Marina
First-timersBelow Dalt Vila.

A walled old town above a busy port, and an island that runs on a club season from May to October. Beautiful beaches, the world's most famous nightlife, and very expensive in August.
Ibiza Town, Eivissa, is the island's capital, built around a port below Dalt Vila, a hilltop old town enclosed by sixteenth-century Renaissance walls. Dalt Vila is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, together with the island's Posidonia seagrass meadows and Phoenician remains.
The island is famous for its superclubs, which open from late spring to early autumn and draw the world's biggest DJs. Beyond the clubs, it has coves of clear water, hippy markets and a quiet interior.
In July and August, Ibiza is one of the most expensive places in Europe. In May, June or late September it is far cheaper. Three or four days is right.
Stay near the port or in Figueretes; Playa d'en Bossa is closest to the big clubs.

The routes we would take, in the order we would take them.
Walk up through the gates of Dalt Vila to the cathedral at the top, for the view over the port and to Formentera.
The big clubs open from late spring to early autumn: Pacha is in town, and others line Playa d'en Bossa and San Rafael. Tickets run €50 to €100 or more; buying online is cheaper.
For beaches, Ses Salines, Cala Comte and the coves of the north are the best, and the ferry to Formentera, with its Caribbean-clear water, takes about half an hour.
The hippy market at Es Canar on Wednesdays dates from the 1970s.
Dalt Vila, the port and the beaches are free.
Sunset at Cala Comte or the rocks of Sant Antoni is free.
Ibizan food: bullit de peix, a fish stew, sofrit pagès, a country meat stew, and flaó, a cheese and mint tart. Hierbas, a herbal liqueur, ends the meal.
Restaurants are expensive in summer; supermarkets and the old town's tapas bars are cheaper.
A menú del día is €15 to €20.
The clubs are the reason many people come: opening parties in late April and May, closing parties in early October. Pre-parties in the port bars start the night.
Drinks in clubs cost €15 to €20; a beer in a bar is €5 to €8.
Ibiza Town is walkable. Buses reach the airport in about fifteen minutes.
In season, the Discobus runs between the towns and the clubs at night. Ferries reach Formentera, Palma, Barcelona, Valencia and Denia.
Ibiza is one of the most expensive places in Europe in July and August, when dorms can pass €80. In May, June and late September it is far cheaper.
The Balearic sustainable tourism tax is charged per night.
The euro is the currency. Cards work almost everywhere, though small bars still like cash.
Ibiza is safe, but party-island care applies: watch your drink, pace yourself in the heat, and use licensed taxis or the Discobus.
Drugs are illegal and penalties are serious.
Emergency number is 112, with English-speaking operators usually available.
