Forget the tourist haunts this month, we want to do as the locals do and squeeze every last drop out of the summer in London! We asked our friends DesignMyNight for the lowdown on London’s hottest events and hangouts, ranging from al fresco cinema nights to mojito-heavy boat cruises. Something tells us we’re in for a mischievous awakening…
Last year’s winners of DesignMyNight’s Best Pop Up award are back with a glittering bang! Escape the city’s busy streets and head to this 80s inspired Miami Beach-themed playground with pastel-painted huts and golden sand. Night parties equal fiery street food with a frozen daiquiris, and dancing the night away to DJs spinning the best of future disco. There’s even Disco-fueled Yoga at 8pm every Tuesday and Disco Aerobics at 10pm every Saturday for some retro daytime chill. Aaaaaand we’re in Miami bitches!
Summer in London is a crucial time of the year for soaking up the rays and making the most of the blue skies. Ditch the conventional cinema antics (you can do that at home) and re-discover your favourite films in magical alfresco settings. The Luna Cinema continues to pop up over the city screening everything from cult classics to modern thrillers. It’s the perfect excuse to take a break from sightseeing and relax under the stars at an epic landmark with some popcorn and bubbles.
Night Tales have set up shop in the heart of Shoreditch to bring a wild bunch of experimental bars shaking up some potent concoctions. It’s also a renowned hotspot for evening bites with a selection of mouth-watering street food including Slow Roast Jerk Chicken from the irresistible Nanny Bill’s. DJs will be on hand to play your favourite beats as you eat, drink and dance ‘til dawn on their hot-to-trot sun terrace.
Every Friday and Saturday the rooftop garden above Brunel’s Thames Tunnel comes to life. Think spectacular cocktails garnished with home grown herbs and flowers from the ‘living wall’. While you’re there, grab your mates, gather around the campfire, and toast fluffy marshmallows while you watch the sun set over the Thames. What better way to make the most of the summer in London? Living.the.life!
If you’re after bold street food and wacky events, you need to visit the RED Market, a raucous pop-up in Shoreditch. Grab a craft beer and say hello to street vendors Taco Dave, Duck It and Na Pizza Fritt. Then to really get into the swing of things, dabble in some crazy golf on any Thursday, Friday or Saturday. Last Days also screen the latest sports action on their huge outdoor flat screen TV, and did we mention this place has five bars?!
Summer ‘aint summer in London if you don’t go to a pop up; and luckily for you lot, there’s a Wild West themed party making quite the commotion in Vauxhall. For £35 you’ll be treated to an immersive five-course meal, with blissful rhythms of live soul and jazz in the background. Keep an eye out for the golden coins hidden in your food and around the mine; you can barter them in exchange for prizes.
Every summer this rooftop gets a revamp, and this time around they’ve gone all groovy with a psychedelic ‘summer of love’ theme in tribute to Dr Strange. Time travel to the swinging 60s and release your inner flower child as you sample the retro cocktails and street food (if you eat just one thing, for the love of god let it be their rainbow bagels!). With a number of events running throughout the summer – like cinema nights and tie-dye workshops – visiting this place is a psychedelic essential.
If you’re a fan of whimsical and fantastical happenings, Camden’s iconic venue Proud Galleries has wacky rooftop just for you. Join the Mad Hatter and his crew on the Alice in Wonderland themed terrace for sumptuous bites, teapot cocktails and absurd activities! Just don’t be late 😉
The Cinema Sleepover Club are bringing an experience like no other to the capital this August. For £45, you can watch your favourite movies in the open-air, from The Wolf of Wall Street to Pretty Woman. The best bit? You get to camp out afterwards, accompanied by delicious street food and a festival-esque after party in a marquee.
10. Cocktail Cruise
Don’t quite fancy touring London on foot? How about a two-and-a-half hour canal ride? For £20 you can hop aboard the Cocktail Cruise, which sails across the beautiful River. We all know the British weather can be a tad schizophrenic, but here the retractable open-air roof guarantees the Cocktail Cruise is all aboard come rain or shine.
