The best spot in LA.. One of best hostels I ever stayed. Restaurant in lobby, rooftop bar with amazing downtown LA view, comfortable rooms with double WC and showers, plug-ins in every bed. Only negative is the additional fee of 5$, without any specific explanation.

Second time staying here. Location was good to get to all the places in LA you want to see. If you want a pretty neighborhood tho pick another place. Facilities are great! Stayed with 5 friends in a pretty dorm room, it eve had a little sofa and coffee table inside.

I really enjoyed my stay at Freehand. The location is safe and central (i.e. close to metro). The facilities were very clean and the bar area / lobby was one of the best I have been to in a hostel design-wise. I think the atmosphere may depend on your roommates a lot - I had some long-term residents who were quite pleasant and kept to themselves. Only things I would improve are the blankets (were slightly itchy due to coarse feel) and breakfast (which is just cereal, juice, toast, and muffins.)

Great stay - the rooms were clean and very cozy! Loved the rooftop patio & pool. I found some staff members unfriendly; wouldn’t even say hi or assist when I was waiting at the lobby desk, even though we made eye contact.

    Fabulous

Great hostel, the rooftop bar is a dream. Lots of mingling with locals who head there regularly. Location is right in the heart of down town LA. Showers in the dorm rooms are a bit messy and had some issues with one of the bathroooms downstairs being out of order but apart from that really great value for money.

Lounge/kitchen nothing special. Place is popular due to its bars/restaurants. DO NOT STAY ON 13TH FL! Music is BLARING until 2am which makes sleeping early very hard. Halls are very poorly lit which is weird? Clean place with good staff. En-suite is nice Would recommend this establishment

    Fabulous

A really great place to lay your head, for a really decent price. Though it’s not your regular hostel, you get a really amazing mattress. The rooms are slightly small considering we stayed in a 4 bed dorm. The pool is an amazing addition and the location is great to reach all areas of LA. only thing I would change is that there was no lock on the bathroom door, which meant we often had to guard each other’s bathroom time. Would definitely book here again.

    Very Good

    1) The added fees brought the room price per night to $63 instead of $52ish. Wasn’t a fan of that. The staff acts like this is no big deal, just blows you off basically. 2) the bathrooms aren’t built well, water gets onto the entire floor from the shower and creates a major slip hazard, I almost fell over multiple times during my stay. 3) the breakfast is uninspiring. Pros: the building itself is super cool and the atmosphere is excellent.

I understand this is a hotel and a hostel, but no activities other than promoting their own "happy hour" is a little ridiculous. It isn't the safest area of LA, so making it easier for guests to meet each other would be great. Rooms were nice but rather small. Friday and Saturday nights you have to share the EXTREMELY SLOW elevators with external guests who want to go to the rooftop bar. I had to wait over 20 minutes to get to my room one night.
