About Stockholm

Stockholm is the glorious capital of Sweden and biggest city in the Nordic countries. This beautiful city on the coast of the Baltic Sea stretches across fourteen islands. Known for coastal beauty, green parks and impressive historic sites as well as Scandinavian design and coolest museums, shops and restaurants, Stockholm is worth a visit the year round.

Most Stockholm hostels can be found from the neighbourhoods of Norrmalm, Vasastan and Gamla Stan. Stockholm can be expensive but those who are looking for cheap accommodation have plenty of cool youth hostels to choose from. Stay in a converted jumbo jet, an anchored sailing boat or a converted prison cell! The best hostels in Stockholm offer free breakfast, wifi, common areas with cooking facilities and guided tours and activities.

Gamla Stan, the Old Town is one of the best preserved medieval city centres in Europe. This lovely neighbourhood with narrow cobblestone streets and colourful buildings is home to some of the main attractions in Sweden, such as Stockholm Cathedral and Kungliga Slottet, Sweden’s baroque-style royal palace. The central Norrmalm has the best transport links as well as the main shopping streets. Södermalm, in particular the SoFo area, is the trendy neighbourhood of Stockholm where you will find the best cafes, restaurants and boutiques.

Stockholm has a number of popular attractions for visitors, including Vasa Museum, the home of the 17th century Swedish warship that sank on its maiden journey. Skansen, the world’s oldest outdoor museum that showcases historic houses and farmsteads from all parts of Sweden is also very popular. And finally, Fotografiska, museum of contemporary photography is not to be missed. Stockholm is known for its cafés so make sure to fika (Swedish for having a lovely coffee break) whilst you’re in the city! Stockholm is also a very green city so parks like Kungliga Humlegården or Djurgården are well worth checking out.

Stockholm Arlanda airport is only 20 minutes away from the city centre when you use the high-speed Arlanda Express train. T-Centralen is the heart of Stockholm’s tube system where most lines connect. It’s easy to get around central Stockholm by foot, but tube is also a good option – the art-filled underground (or as locals call it, tunnelbana) is claimed to be one of the most beautiful tube systems in the world.
