Locals say: I love this market, because the castle itself is beautiful already. This adds a special feeling to the market as during Christmas time it is also lit with special lighting. The market is a little more classy than the usual Christmas market, you’ll find food stands that are not available in many other markets in the city. The stands are presented in containers that are made for that specific market, so it’s a unique experience.

Where To Stay

This is the perfect Christmas market for those who want to avoid hordes of tourists. The gorgeous square round the romantic Nikolaikirche shows films in the open air, as well as choir performances every Sunday, with delicacies such as Jagertee (rum with wine, orange juice and spices), Kinderpunsch (hot mulled non-alcoholic cider), pretzels and crepes on offer.

Locals say: This is my favourite market, because it’s not very well-known – it’s small, cute and intimate, and there is an open air cinema. I also recommend the Christmas market “unter den Linden” for a more romantic experience.

Where To Stay

Ideally located in the centre of Mitte, Friedrichshain, Prenzlauer Berg and Kreuzberg, Singer109 Backpacker Apartment Hostel is a charming 20 minute walk to the market with scope to explore around the area as you head there.

Hi Kaye – I imagine some of them will be, up until lunchtime at least. Was there a particular one you had in mind?

  3. Hi the opening date for Charlottenburg Christmas market is wrong. I believe it’s 27 November. I am in Berlin for the market and it’s not open.

  4. We always graze as we go around the market, it’s part of the fun, sharing different dishes. Your 8 year old will love the sweeties for pudding!
