The emerald river

The Soča runs through the western Julian Alps in a colour that looks edited: a clear, vivid turquoise, over white stones and through narrow gorges. Bovec, a small town in a wide basin under Mount Kanin, is the base for the valley.

It is the adventure sports capital of Slovenia: rafting, kayaking, canyoning, paragliding and ziplining all run from here. The valley was also the front line of the Isonzo battles in the First World War, the setting of Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms, and the Walk of Peace trail follows the old front.

Three days is right, with the Vršič pass to the north.
