Hostel of the Week: Khaosan World Asakusa Ryokan Hostel, Tokyo
What do you get when you renovate a 1980s love hotel? The answer is a snazzy ‘lil hostel in the atmospheric district of Asakusa in downtown Tokyo. The area was previously a huge red light district and the vintage theatres and bars still remain, plus it’s minutes from the famous Tokyo Skytree, Sensoji Temple and Nakamise shopping street.
Tokyo is hot for hostels, so why choose Khaosan? Well, even though it’s a ryokan (a traditional Japanese Inn), parts of the hostel are decorated with a weird but uplifting sci-fi-surrealist theme! There’s a light up, see-through Jacuzzi left from the good old days, and you can even pick rooms with light controls and mirrored walls. Kinky!
This hostel is mega social and ideal if you are travelling alone. There’s a bar with a complimentary Sake on arrival, a kitchen, dining area and an epic common room with books, a massage chair and free tea and coffee! If that wasn’t enough to convince you, the uber friendly staff have been known to “make” the hostel experience with their 9.0 rating from our happy customers. Here’s what they had to say:
“GREAT experience. Everything went incredibly smoothly, was very easy to figure out, and everyone was so kind! Also, the water pressure/temperature for the showers is incredible.”
“I had a really great time at this hostel!! I came in for the trip alone and came out with some great new friends and stories! 🙂 Looking forward to coming here again! Everyone was so friendly and helpful!”
“Best hostel I have stayed in, so clean, staff were so helpful and so close to everything you could want in Asakusa! Would recommend to anyone heading to Tokyo honestly.”
