Hostel of the Week: Caveland, Santorini

Hostel of the Week: Caveland, Santorini

Do you smell that? It’s the fragrant scent of the vanilla, pear and pistachio trees that surround this oh-so-heavenly hostel. Caveland is in the heart of Santorini but off the beaten path, *literally* hidden in the hills away from the resort-dwelling holiday crowd. This unusual hostel is a seriously Greek affair – what’s more authentic than sleeping in a former 18th century winery housed in 8 caves made from 3600 year old volcanic pumice? Wait, 3,600 YEARS OLD?! This is the real deal, my friends.

Caveland may be a little jewel of serenity, but there is no shortage of ALOLs going on here. The grounds are equipped with two tennis courts (built by Thomas E. Wilson of THE Wilson Tennis back in the day- vintage kudos!) and the previous fella built a swimming pool back in 1884. Caveland is now run by two backpackers, and one just so happens to be a Yoga instructor, and teaches classes on the terrace with a blinding view of the Agean Sea. This hostel is ideal if you want some quality headspace with a few (free) breakfasts, dinners and a BBQs thrown in to grill out and socialise with other travellers.

So you’re tucked away in your own little oasis, daydreaming, and then FOMO always rears its ugly head! But no worries, the capital of the Island Fira town is a 20 minute stroll away. Here you’ll find those rainbow-coloured cliffs and narrow streets brimming with restaurants and shops. FOMO, take a chill!

At Caveland, you can chose from dorms with beds from £12.23, or upgrade to a private cave or even your own apartment – swish! Either way, the warm welcome and home-spun décor keeps that ole Santorinian vibe in the air. Are you thinking what we’re thinking? Get us to the Greek!

“Lauren and Matt are seriously the best hostel staff that I have ever encountered! More than helpful and super friendly. Willing to do anything to provide the best experience to its guest! The hostel itself is also pretty amazing which I would also rank one of the best in the world. Has a great value for what the place has to offer. Unique with a great style, this hostel gives an experience that you won’t regret. **Also this place is highly clean.”

“Probably the best hostel I’ve ever stayed in – beautiful, peaceful and special. Great yoga, great guests and opportunities to mingle if wanted, or chill in peace if not.”

“The best place with the best staff (shout out to Lauren and Matt!). I came alone and easily met many people for the 5 nights there. A bit away from Fira town but it’s so easy to walk to the city and you can always just rent an ATV to get around. The caves are beautiful and spacious and the decor is on point. It was quieter around Santorini at this time but we said we couldn’t imagine it with the crowds! Everything was perfect. Thanks for the best mini holiday, Caveland fam!”

Caveland is the best hostel I’ve ever stayed at. It’s clean and comfortable and so so beautiful! Walking in I thought I had to be at the wrong place. There’s a pool and three adorable pups!!! The beds are comfy and the whole place is just wonderful. Staff were so amazing and friendly! If you’re on santorini there is no other place to stay in my opinion. Caveland is the bomb.”
