Hostel of the week: Wombat’s City Hostel, Budapest

The cat is out of the bag and Budapest has sneaked up on people’s bucket lists over the past few years, and who could blame them? It’s brimming with rooftop clubs, thermal spas and killer hostels, all with backdrop of the shimmering Danube and those Rapunzel-esque towers. A Hoscar award for The Most Popular Hostel in Budapest and a 97% location proves that Wombat’s City Hostel is a bulletproof choice for weekenders and backpackers. For starters, you get a free drink on entry, free towels, free lockers, free luggage storage, a laundry service AND hairdryers in the rooms. High life, here you come!

But first, let us give you a little history lesson. The hostel building was originally built in 1840 on Király utca, the “King’s Alley”. Now, for most of the 19th Century this street was the life and soul of the city, full of shops, bars and reckless debauchery. It was said dancers wore nothing but pearl necklaces and drunks were wheeled in wheelbarrows from wine bars. Ah, Budapest, you scoundrel you! Although the city was given a modern makeover in the new age of the 19th Century, the charm of Király still floats in the air. The building has been everything from a bakery to an umbrella factory, and now Wombat’s has begun a new chapter in its history with this rockin’ hostel you see before you.

In past few years Budapest has taken the reigns as one of Europe’s best party capitals, and lucky for you, Wombat’s is a second away from the Jewish District. Located in derelict buildings from the war are over 20 ruins bars – a bohemian hybrid of bar, café, beer garden and nightclub that is unique to Hungary. The bigger ones often come with the odd cinema, pizzeria or a 24 hour policy so you can set up camp and party for days on end. If you fancy boogying in a former 1950s dental laboratory, or getting your mind blown by upcoming underground DJs, Buda will be the best raving buddy you’ve ever had. The only rule at Wombat’s is “no lockout and no stupid rules” which is a rule we can live by fo’ sho. The WomBAR is where travellers unite, and with a spectacular happy hour, your guaranteed its gon’ be jumping. When downtime is needed, walk or wheelbarrow back to your spacious dorm and snuggle up next to your individual plug and night light for a glorious recharge of mind, body and iPhone. Mornings are all about wearing your fat pants and hitting the all you can eat breakfast for just €3.20 before your adventures begin. With beds from £9/€11/$13, we think that’s a pretty sweet deal!
