Historic centre
First-timersAround Plaza Las Delicias.

Puerto Rico's southern city: a grand plaza with a red-and-black striped firehouse, one of the best art museums in the Caribbean, a rum family's hilltop mansion, coffee haciendas, Taíno ruins and the masked vejigantes of its carnival.
Ponce, on the Caribbean coast about 90 minutes south of San Juan, is Puerto Rico's second historic city. It grew rich on sugar, rum and coffee in the 19th century, and its centre is full of neoclassical and Creole-style mansions around the Plaza Las Delicias.
On the plaza stand the cathedral and the Parque de Bombas, a red-and-black wooden firehouse built for a fair in 1882 and now a museum. The Museo de Arte de Ponce holds one of the finest collections of European art in the Caribbean.
Ponce is proud of its own identity, best seen at its February carnival, with masked vejigantes. It is warmer and drier than the north. Give it two days.
Stay in the historic centre around the Plaza Las Delicias; La Guancha by the sea is a weekend hangout.
