Tobago's south-west tip: the palm-fringed jetty at Pigeon Point, glass-bottom boats to Buccoo Reef and the Nylon Pool, swimming at Store Bay, and Sunday School, the weekly street party in Buccoo.
Crown Point is the flat south-western tip of Tobago, where the airport, most guesthouses and the best-known beaches are. It is the easiest base on the island, with everything within walking distance or a short taxi ride.
Pigeon Point, with its thatched jetty and calm turquoise water, is one of the most photographed beaches in the Caribbean. Store Bay is the public beach where glass-bottom boats leave for Buccoo Reef, a protected reef, and the Nylon Pool, a shallow sandbar in the middle of the sea.
Next door, the village of Buccoo hosts Sunday School, a street party that has run every Sunday night since the 1970s. Give Crown Point three or four days.
Crown Point itself for beaches and the airport; Buccoo for a village feel; Mount Irvine for surf and quiet.

Spend a day at Pigeon Point, and swim at Store Bay, where food huts sell crab and dumpling. Take a glass-bottom boat from Store Bay or Buccoo to snorkel Buccoo Reef and stand in the waist-deep Nylon Pool.
On Sunday night, go to Sunday School in Buccoo: steelband first, then a sound system party late into the night.
Surf at Mount Irvine in the winter swell, visit Fort Milford, and watch the goat and crab races at Buccoo on Easter Tuesday.
Store Bay is a free public beach, and so are Mount Irvine and Grange Bay. Sunday School is free to join.
Walking to Fort Milford costs nothing.
Pigeon Point charges a small entry fee, and reef trips charge.
The food huts at Store Bay serve curry crab and dumpling, Tobago's signature dish, as well as roti and bake and shark, for €6 to €12.
Restaurant mains cost €15 to €30.
Try rum punch and fresh juices. A 10 to 15 per cent tip is usual in restaurants; check the bill first, as some add a service charge.

Tobago is calmer than Trinidad, but petty theft and occasional robberies happen. Do not leave belongings on the beach, and take a taxi late at night.
On reef trips, do not stand on the coral.
Tap water is generally safe, but many people drink bottled water, especially after heavy rain. In an emergency, call 999 for the police, 990 for the fire service or 811 for an ambulance.
