Tobago's beach corner

Crown Point is the flat south-western tip of Tobago, where the airport, most guesthouses and the best-known beaches are. It is the easiest base on the island, with everything within walking distance or a short taxi ride.

Pigeon Point, with its thatched jetty and calm turquoise water, is one of the most photographed beaches in the Caribbean. Store Bay is the public beach where glass-bottom boats leave for Buccoo Reef, a protected reef, and the Nylon Pool, a shallow sandbar in the middle of the sea.

Next door, the village of Buccoo hosts Sunday School, a street party that has run every Sunday night since the 1970s. Give Crown Point three or four days.

Safety and scams

Tobago is calmer than Trinidad, but petty theft and occasional robberies happen. Do not leave belongings on the beach, and take a taxi late at night.

On reef trips, do not stand on the coral.

Tap water is generally safe, but many people drink bottled water, especially after heavy rain. In an emergency, call 999 for the police, 990 for the fire service or 811 for an ambulance.
