Papeete is Tahiti's capital and where every trip to French Polynesia starts. It's a busy little harbour town rather than a beach resort, and that's its appeal: an early morning at the covered market, dinner from the roulottes food trucks on the waterfront, and a loop around Tahiti before the ferry to Moorea.
Papeete sits on the north-west coast of Tahiti, the largest island in French Polynesia, and is the territory's capital, main port and home to Faa'a International Airport, a few kilometres west of the centre.
The town is compact, with the covered market, shops, cafés and the harbour all within a short walk. It's French in feel, with bakeries and pharmacies on every corner, and Polynesian in rhythm.
Most travellers spend a night or two here, on arrival or before a flight, and many base themselves in the quieter west-coast suburbs like Puna'auia, where most of Tahiti's budget guesthouses are.
Beyond the town, Tahiti is mountainous and green, with black-sand beaches, waterfalls and valleys in the interior, and the famous wave at Teahupo'o on Tahiti Iti, the smaller southern peninsula.
Papeete is also the hub for everything else: the ferry to Moorea leaves from the town centre, and Air Tahiti flies from Faa'a to the other islands.
Stay in the centre for the market, roulottes and ferry, or in Puna'auia on the west coast for beaches and guesthouses. Tahiti Iti is for surfers and quiet.

The Marché de Papeete, the covered market, is busiest early in the morning and on Sundays at dawn, with fruit, fish, flowers, pareos, monoi oil and black pearls.
Walk the waterfront, from the ferry terminal past Place To'ata, the open-air stage used during Heiva in July, to the Paofai gardens.
Eat at the roulottes, the food trucks that set up on the waterfront each evening.
Drive around Tahiti in a day. The coast road loops Tahiti Nui, past black-sand beaches, the Arahoho blowhole, the Faarumai waterfalls and Point Venus, where Captain Cook observed the transit of Venus in 1769.
The Musée de Tahiti et des Îles in Puna'auia covers Polynesian history and culture.
On Tahiti Iti, watch surfers at Teahupo'o, the heavy reef wave that hosted the 2024 Olympic surfing.
Snorkel or swim at Puna'auia's beaches on the west coast, where the lagoon is calm.
The covered market is free to browse.
The waterfront, Place To'ata and the Paofai gardens are free.
Point Venus and Tahiti's black-sand beaches are free.
Heiva performances in July include some free events.
The roulottes are the cheapest good food in Papeete: food trucks on the waterfront serving poisson cru, steak frites, chow mein and crêpes for XPF1,200 to XPF2,000.
Poisson cru, raw tuna in lime and coconut milk, is the national dish and on every menu.
Bakeries sell price-controlled baguettes, and the market has cooked food stalls upstairs.
Supermarkets are the way to save on a longer stay. Hinano, the local beer, costs XPF500 to XPF900 in a shop.
Papeete has the territory's only real nightlife: bars along the waterfront and a few clubs, busiest on Friday and Saturday nights.
In July, Heiva fills To'ata square with dance and singing competitions every night.
Faa'a International Airport is about 5 km west of the centre. Taxis are expensive, so many guesthouses offer transfers.
Local buses run along the coast roads, but services are limited, especially in the evening and on Sundays.
To see Tahiti properly, hire a car for a day.
The Moorea ferry leaves from the terminal in the centre, about 30 minutes, several times a day.
Air Tahiti flies from Faa'a to Bora Bora, Huahine, Raiatea, Rangiroa and the rest of the islands.
Papeete is expensive, but it's the cheapest base in French Polynesia. Hostelworld lists beds from about XPF2,860 at a Puna'auia guesthouse, and about XPF4,600 in a dorm in Papeete.
Roulottes plates are XPF1,200 to XPF2,000, against XPF3,000 to XPF5,000 for a restaurant main.
Car hire is the main extra cost, and taxis are pricey.
The CFP franc is pegged to the euro.
Allow around XPF9,000 to XPF14,000 a day.
Papeete is safe, with low crime. Watch your belongings around the market and waterfront at night, as you would anywhere.
The hazards are in the water: currents in reef passes, coral cuts and stonefish. Teahupo'o is for expert surfers only.
Health services on Tahiti are good. In an emergency, call 15 for medical help and 17 for the police.
Cyclone season runs from November to April.
From Papeete, you can loop Tahiti by car or take the ferry to Moorea.
