Mindelo Travel Guide

Mindelo is Cape Verde's cultural capital, a pastel-coloured port town on São Vicente where live music spills out of the bars every night. It's the home of morna and Cesária Évora, throws the country's biggest Carnival, and is the jumping-off point for the hiking island of Santo Antão, an hour away by ferry.

Mindelo at a glance

Mindelo sits on a deep natural harbour, the Porto Grande, on the north-west coast of São Vicente island. It grew in the 19th century as a coaling station for British ships crossing the Atlantic, and its colonial streets, squares and pastel buildings still show that history.

Today it's Cape Verde's second city and its cultural heart. Music is everywhere: morna, the slow, melancholy song style made famous by Cesária Évora, who was born here, as well as coladeira and funaná. Bars and restaurants have live music most nights, and the town's Carnival, before Lent, is the biggest in the country.

The centre is compact and walkable, with Praça Nova (Praça Amílcar Cabral), the fish and fruit markets, the Torre de Belém, a small replica of Lisbon's tower on the waterfront, and colourful colonial buildings. Laginha beach is just north of the centre.

São Vicente is dry and rocky, but its landscapes are dramatic, with Monte Verde, the island's highest point, and beaches at Baía das Gatas, Calhau and São Pedro.

Most travellers spend a couple of nights here before or after Santo Antão, but many end up staying longer for the music.

Things to do

Music, markets and the bay

Walk the centre, starting at Praça Nova, the main square, and wander past colonial buildings, the Palácio do Povo, the Mercado Municipal fruit and vegetable market and the fish market by the water. The Torre de Belém, a small replica of Lisbon's tower, is on the waterfront.

Laginha beach, a short walk north of the centre, is the town beach, with calm water and views of the harbour.

The music is the highlight. Bars and restaurants around the centre host live morna, coladeira and funaná, especially from Thursday to Sunday. The Cesária Évora house and memorials celebrate the town's most famous singer.

Monte Verde, the highest point on São Vicente, has views over the island and across to Santo Antão on a clear day.

Baía das Gatas, on the east coast, has a natural sea pool protected by rocks and hosts the island's big music festival in August. Calhau, nearby, has volcanic landscapes and seafood restaurants.

Santo Antão, an hour away by ferry, is the island for hiking, and can be a day trip or, better, an overnight stay.

Mindelo's Carnival, in February or March, is the biggest party in Cape Verde, with parades, floats and costumes.

Free things

Walk the colonial centre and Praça Nova, and watch everyday life in the squares.

Browse the fish market and the Mercado Municipal.

Food and drink

Cachupa, tuna and grogue

Cachupa, the national stew of maize, beans and fish or meat, is served at kiosks and cafés around Praça Nova for a couple of euros. In the morning, try cachupa refogada, fried with an egg.

Fresh fish and seafood are excellent: grilled tuna, wahoo, octopus and lobster at the restaurants near the harbour.

Pastéis, fried pastries filled with tuna, are a cheap snack, and the bakeries sell Portuguese-style bread and cakes.

Grogue, the local sugarcane rum, and pontche, a rum liqueur, are cheap in the local bars, and Strela is the local beer.

A restaurant meal costs around €8 to €15. Drink bottled water.

Nightlife

Live morna and music bars

Mindelo has the best nightlife in Cape Verde, and it's all about live music. Bars and restaurants around the centre have morna, coladeira and funaná most nights, especially from Thursday to Sunday. Some add a small surcharge on music nights.
