Old town
First-timersThe main street between the castle and the river.

A great castle on a hill above a small town on the river Our, in the Luxembourg Ardennes. Rebuilt from a ruin, and the country's best day trip.
Vianden Castle is one of the largest fortified castles west of the Rhine, built between the eleventh and fourteenth centuries on a rock above the river Our. It was the seat of the Counts of Vianden and later the House of Orange-Nassau, fell into ruin in the nineteenth century after its contents were sold off, and was restored from the 1970s after the state took it over. It is now one of the most photographed buildings in Luxembourg.
The town below it is small and pretty, a single main street running down the hill to the river, with Germany on the far bank. Victor Hugo lived here in exile in 1871, and his house is a museum.
Vianden is an easy day trip from Luxembourg City on free public transport, but staying the night means the castle lit up after dark and the valley to yourself. The hiking in the surrounding hills is excellent.
The town is tiny. Everything is along the main street between the castle and the river.

Visit the castle. The restored halls, chapel and kitchens, and the views from the walls over the valley, make it the best castle visit in Luxembourg.
Take the chairlift, which runs in the warmer months, up the hill opposite the castle for the view back across the valley. It is the classic picture of Vianden.
The Victor Hugo House, by the bridge, is where the writer lived in 1871 and has letters, drawings and the story of his stay.
Walk down to the river and along the Our. The hills around the town have waymarked hiking trails through the forest, and the Vianden pumped-storage power station upstream has a visitor centre.
The town and the riverside are free. The view of the castle from the bridge and the streets is free, and at night the castle is lit up.
The hiking trails in the surrounding hills are free.
The bus and train from Luxembourg City are free.
Vianden has restaurants and cafés along the main street, many with terraces over the valley. Luxembourgish and Ardennes cooking, with game in autumn, is the local fare.
The town is known for walnuts and holds a walnut market every October, with walnut liqueur, cakes and bread.
Eating out is expensive, as it is everywhere in Luxembourg; lunch menus are the best value.
Vianden is quiet at night. Evenings are for dinner on a terrace and a walk to see the castle lit up.
For a night out, Luxembourg City is about an hour away on free transport.
Vianden is small and walkable, though the street up to the castle is steep.
From Luxembourg City, take the train to Ettelbruck and the bus from there to Vianden. The whole journey takes about an hour and is free, like all public transport in the country. Buses also run to Diekirch and Clervaux.
Germany is across the bridge over the Our.
Vianden is expensive like the rest of Luxembourg. The youth hostel, close to the castle, is the budget option, with dorms from around €35 to €40. The hostel is due to move to a new, larger building in 2026.
A careful day is €55 to €70. The costs are the castle ticket, the chairlift and meals. The transport and the hiking are free.
