Hostel of the Week: Lost Inn Lisbon, Chiado

Located in the historical district of Chiado with the endless, glistening Tagus River flowing in the background, Lost Inn Lisbon is perfectly wedged in between the happening areas of Bairro Alto and Cais do Sodré.

Our Portuguese local from the Hostelworld office, Joao, gives us some insider tips on where to eat and drink: “Besides Caipirinhas and good Fado (traditional Portuguese music), Bairro Alto is a lively place to hang out in the evenings, with live entertainment, music and little boutiques and concept stores whose doors stay open until the early hours.

Then, everyone goes to Cais do Sodré, which already stands out for its garish pink asphalt road. It’s an area formerly littered with brothels and gambling houses where sailors went for a night of delight after the hard months at sea. However over the years it has been transformed into one of the most vibrant night spots in Lisbon with burlesque shows, live concerts, tapas and cocktails bars serving drinks named “Chic Whores”!

You have to go to Mercado da Ribeira, Lisbon’s main food market since 1892. In 2014 it was taken over by Time Out Lisboa magazine who added stalls offering food and traditional local products. The new food court at Mercado da Ribeira – Lisbon’s biggest fresh food market – has become a firm favourite among Lisboans.”

Another must-go we recommend is The Village Underground Lisboa, an imaginative outdoor space with decorated craters and old buses where creative activities and cultural events are often held.
