The country's biggest city and transport hub: wooden colonial houses, the hand-swung bridge, the Museum of Belize, water taxis to the cayes, and day trips to the Belize Zoo, Altun Ha and the howler monkey sanctuary.
Belize City was the capital until 1970, when Hurricane Hattie led the government to build Belmopan inland. It is still the country's biggest city and its transport hub: the international airport, the water taxis to the cayes and the main bus routes all start here. Most travellers pass straight through, and with good reason, as parts of the city have high crime. But the centre is worth a few hours, and the city makes a practical base for day trips.
Haulover Creek divides the city, crossed by the Swing Bridge, one of the last manually operated swing bridges in the world. Around it are wooden colonial buildings, St John's Cathedral, the oldest Anglican church in Central America, and the Museum of Belize, in the old colonial prison. Fort George, the waterfront district, has the lighthouse and the tomb of Baron Bliss, the city's benefactor.
Day trips go to the Belize Zoo, home to rescued native animals, the Maya site of Altun Ha, the Community Baboon Sanctuary for black howler monkeys, and Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary. Give it a day, or a night between flights and boats.

Walk across the Swing Bridge and around the centre, see the wooden colonial houses, and visit St John's Cathedral and the Museum of Belize, in the old prison, for the history of the country and its Maya past. In Fort George, walk the waterfront to the lighthouse and the Baron Bliss tomb, and visit the Image Factory, a gallery of Belizean art.
Outside the city, the Belize Zoo, about 45 minutes west, houses rescued native animals, including jaguars, tapirs and harpy eagles. Altun Ha, about an hour north, is a Maya site with temples. The Community Baboon Sanctuary protects black howler monkeys, and Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary is great for birds.
From the city, cave tubing trips go to the Nohoch Che'en caves, and boats leave for the cayes.
Walking around the centre, the Swing Bridge and the Fort George waterfront costs nothing. St John's Cathedral is free to visit.
Watching the Swing Bridge open, usually early in the morning and late in the afternoon, is free.
