Cliffs, salt and sunsets

Cabo Rojo is the town and district at the south-western tip of Puerto Rico, about 2.5 hours from San Juan. It is where Puerto Ricans come for the beach: drier and sunnier than the north, with calm Caribbean water.

At the very tip, the Los Morrillos lighthouse stands on pale red cliffs, with Playa Sucia (La Playuela), a curved, sheltered beach, below. Inland are the Cabo Rojo salt flats, worked since Taíno times and home to many birds. Boquerón village fills with bars and oyster stalls at weekends.

The area is mostly guesthouses and rentals. Give Cabo Rojo two or three days, with a night trip to the bio bay at La Parguera.

Safety

Safety and scams

Cabo Rojo is relaxed. Stay back from the cliff edges at the lighthouse, and do not leave valuables in parked cars at the beaches.

Bring water and shade; the sun is strong and there is little cover at the lighthouse.

Tap water is generally safe to drink, but buy bottled water after storms or outages. In an emergency, call 911.
