Beach below the rainforest

Luquillo is a small town on Puerto Rico's north-east coast, about 45 minutes from San Juan. Its public beach, Balneario La Monserrate, is a sheltered curve of sand with calm water, palm trees and lifeguards, one of the most family-friendly on the island.

Along the main road are the Luquillo kiosks, around 60 food stands selling fritters, seafood, mofongo and cocktails. Behind the town rise the mountains of El Yunque, the only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest System, with trails, waterfalls and viewpoints.

Fajardo, 15 minutes east, has the Laguna Grande bioluminescent lagoon and the ferries to Vieques and Culebra. Give Luquillo two or three days.

Things to do

Things to do in Luquillo

Spend a day at Balneario La Monserrate and eat your way along the kiosks. La Pared, at the east end of town, is a surf beach.

Drive up into El Yunque: climb the Yokahú tower and Mount Britton tower for views, and hike to waterfalls such as La Mina and Juan Diego. Entry on PR-191 is free and no longer needs a reservation, but parking is limited, so arrive soon after the 8am opening; check which trails are open.

In Fajardo, take a night kayak tour of Laguna Grande, and a catamaran trip to the snorkelling islands off the coast.
