The island with two Danish towns

St Croix lies about 65 kilometres south of St Thomas and is the largest of the US Virgin Islands. Under Danish rule, it was a sugar island, and its two towns, Christiansted and Frederiksted, keep their arcaded streets, yellow forts and colonial warehouses.

The island is flatter and drier in the east and greener in the west, with a patch of rainforest. Offshore, Buck Island Reef National Monument has an underwater snorkelling trail, and the north coast drops into a deep wall at Cane Bay that divers can reach from the beach. Salt River Bay, where Columbus landed in 1493, has bioluminescence.

St Croix is quieter and less expensive than St Thomas and St John. Give it three or four days.

Dive the wall at Cane Bay, snorkel under the Frederiksted pier, and kayak Salt River Bay at night to see the bioluminescence.

Tour the Cruzan and Captain Morgan rum distilleries, visit the Estate Whim plantation museum, and watch the sunrise from Point Udall, the easternmost point of the United States.

Snorkelling from the beach at Cane Bay is free if you bring gear.

The fort, distillery tours and boat trips charge.

Food and drink

Eating and drinking

Cruzan rum is made on the island.

Tipping works as in the US: 15 to 20 per cent in restaurants and bars, on every round.

A beer costs €4 to €7 and a cocktail €8 to €13, plus tips.

Getting around

Getting around

Henry E. Rohlsen Airport has flights from St Thomas (about 25 minutes) and the US mainland. Seaplanes link Christiansted with Charlotte Amalie, and some ferries run at weekends.

Hire a car to explore; the island is about 45 kilometres long. Driving is on the left. Taxis charge set rates; agree the fare first.

Costs

What St Croix costs

Guesthouse rooms start at around €60 to €120 a night. Local plates cost €12 to €20.

The currency is the US dollar; prices here are converted to euros.

Safety

Safety and scams

Visitor areas are generally safe, but St Croix has a higher violent crime rate than the US mainland, mostly away from tourist areas. Take taxis at night and do not leave anything in parked cars.

Currents can be strong, and many beaches have no lifeguards.

Much of the water comes from desalination or rain cisterns, so many people drink bottled or filtered water. In an emergency, call 911.
