For some people, travel isn’t just a way to see stunning views, to try delicious food and to experience life outside of their normal comfort zones. For many, it’s a doorway to adventure, a chance to seek new adrenaline-inducing thrills and an opportunity to show the world what they’re made of. We know that feeling well, and have compiled a list of some of the best hostels in the world for those of you dreaming of action-packed travel…
Just look at that photo of the main lobby! Each of the Sant Jordi hostel group is themed differently (we actually just featured another one in our music hostels roundup), and this one is definitely one of the absolute coolest. The Sagrada Familia hostel is skateboard-themed, complete with a skate ramp stage and décor that pays homage to the history of the extreme sport. The hostel has a whopping score of 9.5/10 based on customer reviews, so you know it’s a tried and tested favourite! Don’t forget to ask the awesome staff for their favourite local skate spots!
If you’re feeling adventurous (and our guess if you are ;)) then you must check out Rock Solid Backpackers. They have a massive climbing wall IN THE HOSTEL! Seriously! One minute you’ll be scaling your new indoor Everest, and the next you’ll be shooting pool or kicking back with your fellow explorers in the plush basement cinema room. The amazing staff can also point you in the direction of more local adventure, such as downhill luging, visits to traditional Maori villages and even a local hot hangi (feast). What are you waiting for? 😉
If staying atop the beautiful Swiss Alps doesn’t give you an adrenaline kick, than nothing will. At Backpackers Villa Sonnenhof it would be a grand sweeping understatement to say that you have a LOT of options! Skydiving your thing? No problem! Paragliding? Sorted! Need lift passes and ski/snowboard rentals so you can take advantage of one of the best snow destinations in the world? Backpackers Villa has got you covered! Their incredible guest reviews and 100% climate neutral policies don’t hurt either!
They say that “once you come to Pak-Up, you’ll never want to pack up,” and we’d have to agree. The awesome hostel will help get you stuck into a whole host of adventures like scuba diving, snorkelling, kayaking and canoeing. You can also get some much needed R&R at stunning Ao Nang Beach, and the hostel staff can point you in the direction of boat trips to magestic Phi Phi island. Pak-Up offers a perfect marriage of adventure and nature at its best
Through our thoroughly scientific twitter polls, we commonly see that by far one of the most important features to consider when booking a hostel is the location of that hostel. If that is true then you can’t go wrong with Hostel Soca Rocks, with its mega 10/10 perfect location rating by guests. It’s just a minute away from the town centre’s restaurants and bars, as well as the legendary Soča River. The hostel owns a sports agency, which offers a long list of adventurous outings such as rafting, kayaking, hiking, mountain biking, zip lining etc. So even booking your death-defying adrenaline burst can be done in house!
Australia and surfing go together like eggs and bacon, and while there are certainly a whole array of amazing Australian hostels to choose from, this one is one of our particular faves. They have a free laundry service and a different club nights and pub crawls throughout the week to help you party animals get moving! You’re just 30 seconds away from Surfers Paradise Beach, so you’ll be able to get early dibs on the best surf of the day before spiking your way to glory in a game of pool volleyball back at the hostel.
You’ll never stay in a place quite like Old Town Hostel, that’s for sure. The ratings for this place are through the roof (9.5/10 from over 1000 reviews) and it’s easy to see why. The beautiful hostel is made from a renovated old stately home, and will help you feel like you’ve been transported back to the middle ages without skimping on the modern conveniences. Best of all, the hostel offers bike hire and rafting tours, so get ready to test your skills on the rushing waters of Montenegro!
GreenGo Hostel & Bar exists to be a help for travellers. It’s a place to rest up and plan your adventures. It’s only 4 blocks from the city centre, and surrounded by art, culture and entertainment, so the vibe is second to none and the location is sublime (9.4/10 location rating by guests). Best of all, you can get your sky dive on at the nearby Alta Gracia Aeroclub!
Back to Barcelona for this one, but it would be a crime not to mention it. Bcnsporthostels is every traveling athlete’s dream, so while the sports aren’t as extreme as sky diving or river rafting, the basketball courts, football pitch, handball court, gym and lap swimming pool will get your competitive juices and adrenaline flowing. After your sporting battles you can even recuperate in the hot tub and sauna, and/or catch a flick in the cinema room.
This one is a doozy. If you’re not sold on the weather, maybe the atmosphere (9.6/10 guest rating), the helpful staff (9.8/10 guest rating), or perhaps the basically perfect location (9.8/10 guest rating). Okay, enough with the numbers (as impressive as they may be). The hostel is fab, with all manner of water sports available and surf lessons given by their experienced instructors. You can even rent motorcycles if you’re more of a land shark.
