Perth Travel Guide

Perth is the most isolated big city on earth and the sunniest in Australia: white Indian Ocean beaches, a huge park above the river, and Fremantle's markets and pubs down the road. Ride a bike around Rottnest Island with the quokkas, then head south to Margaret River or north to the Pinnacles.

Perth at a glance

Perth sits on the Swan River on Australia's west coast, closer to Bali than to Sydney. It's the capital of Western Australia and the starting point for the long, empty west coast.

The city centre is compact and modern, with the river on one side and Kings Park, one of the largest inner-city parks in the world, on the hill above. Northbridge, just north of the centre, is the nightlife and backpacker district, with bars, cheap food and most of the hostels.

West of the city, a line of white-sand beaches runs along the Indian Ocean, from Cottesloe to Scarborough, with famous sunsets over the water.

Fremantle, at the mouth of the river, is Perth's port and a city in its own right, with 19th-century buildings, markets, breweries and a UNESCO-listed convict prison. Ferries run from Fremantle and Perth to Rottnest Island, home of the quokka.

Perth is relaxed, sunny and spread out, and quieter than the east coast. It's also a working hub, thanks to the mining industry, with good wages for travellers on working holiday visas.

Three or four days covers the city, Fremantle and Rottnest, and it's the base for road trips to Margaret River, the Pinnacles and the north-west coast.

Things to do

Kings Park, beaches and Rottnest

Kings Park, on the hill above the city, has views over the Swan River and the skyline, a botanic garden of Western Australian wildflowers, bushland walks and a treetop walkway. It's free.

The beaches are the city's pride. Cottesloe is the classic, with a sheltered swim and a famous sunset. Scarborough is livelier, with surf, bars and a beach pool. City Beach and Trigg are good for surfing.

Fremantle, half an hour by train, has the Fremantle Markets, the convict-built Fremantle Prison (a UNESCO site), the Maritime Museum, breweries, cafés and pubs. It's easy to spend a day.

Rottnest Island, a ferry ride from Fremantle or Perth, is car-free, with beaches, snorkelling and quokkas, the small, smiling marsupials famous for selfies. Hire a bike and ride around the island. Don't touch or feed the quokkas, as it's illegal.

The Swan Valley, east of the city, has wineries, breweries and chocolate shops.

Further afield, Margaret River, about three hours south, has wineries, surf and caves, and the Pinnacles, about two and a half hours north, are limestone spires in the desert.

Northbridge is the centre of Perth's nightlife, with bars, clubs and small venues, plus hostel bars and pub crawls.

Fremantle has pubs, breweries and live music, and is livelier at weekends.

Scarborough has beach bars and sunset drinks.

Perth is quieter than Sydney or Melbourne, but there's plenty on at weekends. Trains and buses run late on weekends.

Getting around

Costs

What Perth costs

Perth is expensive, but cheaper than Sydney for some things. Hostelworld lists dorm beds from about AU$29 at Kangaroo Inn and AU$48 at The Shiralee, with the top-rated Spinner's Backpackers around AU$74.

Cheap food is in Northbridge, and the markets in Fremantle.

The beaches, Kings Park and the CAT buses are free.

The Rottnest Island ferry and bike hire are the main extra costs, and car hire for road trips.

Wages are high if you're on a working holiday visa.

Without working, allow around AU$90 to AU$130 a day.

Safety

Staying safe in Perth

Perth is safe, with low crime. Take the usual care at night in Northbridge.

The sun is extreme, and Perth is one of the sunniest cities in Australia. Wear sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses.

Swim at patrolled beaches between the flags. Sharks are present off the coast, and beaches sometimes close after sightings; follow local warnings.

On Rottnest, don't touch or feed the quokkas, which is illegal and can bring a fine.

On road trips, plan fuel and water carefully, avoid driving at dawn and dusk because of kangaroos, and watch for road trains.

Summer brings bushfire risk, so follow warnings.
