Byron Bay Travel Guide

Byron Bay is the busiest backpacker town on the east coast, and the reason is simple: warm surf, a lighthouse walk at sunrise, dolphins in the bay and a hinterland of waterfalls and markets. It's grown expensive and glossy, but the beaches are free and the hostels are some of the best in Australia.

Byron Bay at a glance

Byron Bay sits on the far north coast of New South Wales, close to the Queensland border, around Cape Byron, the most easterly point of mainland Australia. It's a small town with a big reputation: surf culture, alternative lifestyles and long, golden beaches.

The town centre is compact, a few blocks of cafés, surf shops, bars and hostels a short walk from Main Beach. To the east, the Cape Byron Walking Track climbs to the lighthouse, past Wategos Beach and The Pass, a famous surf break. To the north, Belongil Beach stretches towards the river mouth.

Byron has changed a lot. Celebrity homes, boutique hotels and rising prices have made it one of the most expensive places on the coast, but the backpacker scene is still huge, and the hostels here are among the most social in the country.

Inland, the Northern Rivers hinterland has rainforest, waterfalls, small towns like Bangalow, and the hippie village of Nimbin.

Most travellers spend three to five days here on the way up or down the east coast, between Sydney and Brisbane.

Things to do

Surf, sunrise and the lighthouse

Learn to surf. Byron has some of the best beginner waves in Australia, especially at The Pass and Main Beach, and surf schools run group lessons every day.

Walk the Cape Byron Walking Track, a loop of about 3.7 km through rainforest and along the cliffs to the lighthouse. Go at sunrise to be among the first people in mainland Australia to see the sun. Dolphins are common, and humpback whales pass from about June to November.

Swim at Wategos Beach, a sheltered cove below the lighthouse, and watch the sunset from the rocks.

Julian Rocks, a marine reserve just offshore, is a top dive and snorkel site, with turtles, rays and, in winter, grey nurse sharks.

Kayak with dolphins in the bay on a guided tour.

In the hinterland, visit Minyon Falls, the rainforest of Nightcap National Park, the village of Bangalow and the Sunday markets. Nimbin, an hour away, is a hippie town famous since the 1973 Aquarius Festival.

The weekly markets and the arts and food scene make Byron easy to fill.

Free things

Byron Bay for free (or nearly)

The beaches are free: Main Beach, Clarkes, The Pass, Wategos and Belongil.

The Cape Byron Walking Track to the lighthouse is free, and the best thing to do in Byron.

Watch the sunset from the rocks at Wategos or from the lighthouse.

Spot dolphins from the beach and whales from the lighthouse in season.

Browse the community markets, held on Sundays at different locations.

Hostels run free beach days, yoga and barbecues.

Food and drink

Açaí bowls, fish and chips and hostel cooking

Byron is a health-food town: açaí bowls, smoothies, plant-based cafés and organic produce are everywhere.

Fish and chips on the beach and a pub meal at the Beach Hotel are the classic cheap options.

Restaurants range from cheap Mexican and Thai to fine dining, but prices are high, so most backpackers cook.

The farmers' market on Thursday mornings sells fresh local produce.

A beer is AU$10 to AU$14. Tap water is safe to drink.

Nightlife

Hostel bars and beach pubs

Byron's nightlife is busy for a small town. The hostels have their own bars and events, and the town's pubs and clubs fill up most nights, especially in summer.

The Beach Hotel overlooking Main Beach is the classic pub, with live music.

Nights out often end at the town's few late-night bars, and everything is walkable.

Drinking on the beach is banned in many areas, and police patrol. Watch your drinks and stick with friends.

Getting around

Getting to and around Byron Bay

The nearest airports are Ballina Byron Gateway, about 30 minutes south, and Gold Coast Airport at Coolangatta, about an hour north. Shuttle buses connect both with Byron.

Greyhound and other coaches stop in town on the east coast route, between Sydney (about 12 hours) and Brisbane (about 3 hours).

In town, everything is walkable. Bikes are a good way to reach Belongil and the lighthouse.

Local buses run to Ballina, Lennox Head and the hinterland towns, but a car or tour is easiest for waterfalls and Nimbin.

Costs

What Byron Bay costs

Byron is one of the most expensive places on the east coast. Hostelworld lists dorm beds from about AU$45 to AU$50, and more in summer and during festivals.

Food is expensive in cafés and restaurants, so cooking in the hostel kitchen saves a lot. Fish and chips or a pub meal costs AU$20 to AU$35.

Surf lessons, dive trips and hinterland tours are the main extra costs.

The beaches and the lighthouse walk are free.

Without working, allow around AU$100 to AU$140 a day.

Safety

Staying safe in Byron Bay

Byron is safe, but theft from beaches, cars and hostel rooms happens. Use lockers and don't leave valuables on the sand.

Rip currents are common. Swim only between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches, such as Main Beach and Clarkes.

The sun is extreme, so wear sunscreen and a hat.

On the lighthouse walk, stay on the path and off the cliff edges.

At night, watch your drinks and stick with friends. Drinking on the beach is banned in many areas.

Bushfire and flood seasons can affect the region, so follow local warnings.
