Tofo Travel Guide

Tofo is a small, sandy beach village on Mozambique's south coast and one of the best places on earth to swim with whale sharks. Manta rays, humpback whales and dolphins share these waters, the surf is good and the hostels are right on the beach. Many travellers plan a few days and stay a few weeks.

Tofo at a glance

Tofo, or Praia do Tofo, is a beach village on a peninsula about 20 km from Inhambane, in southern Mozambique. Its long, curving bay of white sand is backed by dunes, palm trees and a small market, and it has a laid-back, barefoot feel.

The ocean is the reason people come. The waters off Tofo are a hotspot for marine megafauna: whale sharks live here all year, with bigger numbers from about October to March, and the reefs offshore are famous for giant manta rays. Humpback whales pass from about June to October. Researchers from the Marine Megafauna Foundation are based here, studying and protecting these animals.

Ocean safaris, snorkelling trips to find whale sharks and dolphins, are the most popular activity, and the dive centres run courses and deep dives on reefs like Manta Reef. The bay itself is good for beginner surfers, with a reef break nearby for more experienced riders.

Tofinho, the rocky headland at the south end of the beach, is the spot for sunset and has a memorial to those who died in the independence struggle. Barra, to the north, has a quieter beach and mangroves.

Inhambane, across the bay, is one of the oldest towns on the coast, with a cathedral, a market and dhows.

Three or four nights covers an ocean safari, a dive and some surf, but many travellers stay longer.

Things to do

Whale sharks, mantas and waves

The ocean safari is the highlight. Boats head out from the beach to look for whale sharks, the world's biggest fish, and you jump in with a mask and snorkel to swim alongside them. Guides keep a respectful distance, of at least 4 m. You may also see dolphins, turtles, manta rays and, in season, humpback whales. Swimming with whales is not allowed.

Diving in Tofo is world class. Reefs such as Manta Reef are famous for giant manta rays, and the area has rays, turtles and reef sharks. Most dive sites are deep, around 25 to 30 m, so an advanced certification helps. The dive centres run PADI courses, from open water to advanced.

The Marine Megafauna Foundation gives talks about the area's whale sharks and mantas, and some dive trips include a researcher.

Surfing is easy to try. The bay has gentle waves for beginners, and board hire and lessons are available on the beach. More experienced surfers head to the reef break at Tofinho.

On land, walk to Tofinho at sunset, take a quad bike or a horse ride along the beaches to Barra, or join a dhow trip to Pig Island for snorkelling and a seafood lunch.

The Tofo Life ecotour, run by local women, lets you learn to cook matapa, a cassava-leaf dish with peanuts and coconut.

Inhambane, across the bay, is worth a half-day trip for its old cathedral, market and quiet colonial streets.

Free things

Tofo for free (or nearly)

Tofo is a beach town, so much of the best stuff is free.

Walk the full length of Tofo beach, from the village to Tofinho, and watch the fishing boats come in.

Climb Tofinho headland for sunset views over the ocean, and look for humpback whales from the cliffs between June and October.

Swim and bodysurf in the bay, which is calm on most days.

Browse the village market for fruit, fresh bread and capulana fabric.

Join a Marine Megafauna Foundation talk to learn about whale sharks and mantas.

Sunday afternoons at the local taverns on the edge of the village are a good, cheap way to meet locals.

Food and drink

Seafood, pão and beach bars

Tofo is a seafood town. Fishermen sell prawns, crayfish and fish on the beach and around the village most mornings, so if you're self-catering, buy straight from them.

The beach restaurants and hostel cafés serve grilled prawns, calamari and fish with piri-piri sauce, plus burgers, pizzas and smoothies.

The village market sells fruit, vegetables and pão, crusty Portuguese-style bread rolls, and local stalls serve plates of rice or xima with fish or chicken for a few euros.

Matapa, cassava leaves cooked with peanuts and coconut milk, is the local dish to try.

2M and Laurentina are the local beers. Buy cans rather than bottles, as bottle deposits are hard to recover. Drink bottled water.

Nightlife

Beach bars and hostel parties

Tofo's nightlife is relaxed and centred on the beach. Hostel bars and beach bars host sundowners, fire pits, live music and the occasional party, especially at weekends.

Restaurants in the village have themed nights, such as pizza or seafood buffets.

On Sunday afternoons, local taverns on the edge of the village fill up with music and dancing.

Don't walk the unlit stretches of beach alone at night, especially between the hostels. Drinking alcohol on public beaches is illegal in Mozambique.

Getting around

Getting to and around Tofo

Tofo is about 450 km north of Maputo. Buses leave Maputo very early, often before dawn, for Inhambane, a journey of most of a day. Some hostels and companies run shuttles between Maputo and Tofo.

From Inhambane, chapas (minibuses) run the 20 km or so to Tofo regularly, and a taxi is quicker.

Inhambane Airport, a few kilometres from Tofo, has flights from Maputo and Johannesburg.

Vilanculos is about 5 hours north by road, by bus or chapa.

Tofo is small enough to walk everywhere. Tofinho is about a 30-minute walk along the beach.

Travel by road only in daylight, and carry your passport at all times.

Costs

What Tofo costs

Tofo is good value. Hostelworld lists dorm beds from about US$11 at Kitesurf Tofo House and Lehani Beach Hostel, and private rooms from about US$13.

Food is cheap if you buy from the market and the fishermen, or eat at local stalls. Beach restaurants cost around €8 to €15 for a meal.

The ocean is where the money goes. Ocean safaris and dives cost tens of euros each, and courses more, so ask at the dive centres for current prices and multi-dive packages.

There are a few ATMs in Inhambane and occasionally in Tofo, but they aren't always reliable, so bring enough cash in meticais.

On a budget, allow around €30 to €45 a day, before ocean activities.

Safety

Staying safe in Tofo

Tofo is relaxed and generally safe, but petty crime happens. Bag-snatching on the beach is common, so never leave your things unattended while you swim.

Parts of the beach between the hostels are unlit at night. Don't walk them alone after dark, especially if you're a woman travelling solo.

In the water, follow your guide's instructions on ocean safaris and dives, keep your distance from whale sharks and never touch them. Jellyfish can be a problem in some seasons, so a long-sleeved rash vest helps. Check rip currents before swimming.

Use reputable dive and safari operators, and make sure your insurance covers diving.

Carry your passport or keep it safe and accessible, as police can ask for ID. Malaria is present, so use repellent and a net.
