Hot, gritty and fun

León was Nicaragua's capital for most of the colonial era and has long been its intellectual and political centre, home to the country's oldest university. It is hotter, rougher round the edges and more local than Granada, with a big student population and a busy street life.

Its cathedral, the largest in Central America, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and you can walk on its white roof. The city's murals and museums tell the story of the Sandinista revolution.

León sits at the foot of the Maribios volcanic chain, and it is the base for volcano boarding at Cerro Negro and overnight hikes up Telica. The beaches at Las Peñitas and Poneloya are close. Give León three or four days.

Where to base yourself

Stay in the centre, within a few blocks of the cathedral; the streets around it have most hostels, bars and food.

Things to do

Things to do in León

Walk on the white rooftop of the cathedral, with views of the volcanoes, and see the churches of La Recolección and Subtiava. Visit the Museo de Arte Fundación Ortiz-Gurdián, one of the best art collections in Central America, and the murals and Museo de la Revolución.

Go volcano boarding at Cerro Negro: hike up a black cinder cone and slide down on a wooden board. Join a guided overnight hike up Telica to see its crater at night, or climb San Cristóbal, the highest volcano in the country.

Spend a day at Las Peñitas beach and take a boat into the mangroves of the Juan Venado reserve.

Free things

And what it costs nothing to do

Walking the centre, the Parque Central and the street murals is free, and so are many of the churches.

The cathedral is free to enter; the roof charges a small fee.

Tours, the roof and museums charge.

Food and drink

Eating and drinking

León's fritangas set up on street corners in the evening, selling grilled meat, gallo pinto and plantain for €2 to €4. The Mercado Central has cheap comedores and fresh juices.

Try quesillo, a soft cheese and tortilla wrap with cream and pickled onion.

Cheap cafés near the university serve set lunches. A 10 per cent service charge is often added to restaurant bills; if it is not, 10 per cent is a fair tip.

Nightlife

Going out

León has the most local nightlife in Nicaragua, thanks to the students. Bars near the centre and the university are cheap and busy, and hostel bars run weekly parties.

Things get going late at weekends.

A beer costs €1 to €2, and rum less.

Getting around

Getting around

The centre is walkable. Managua airport is about an hour and a half away.

Shuttles go to Granada (about 2 hours) and San Juan del Sur, and chicken buses run to Managua, Estelí and Matagalpa. Buses run to Las Peñitas and Poneloya in about 20 to 30 minutes.

Volcano trips are run by tour operators, with transport included.

Costs

What León costs

Hostel beds start at around €7 to €12 a night. Fritangas cost €2 to €4.

Volcano boarding costs about €25 to €35 with transport and gear, a Telica overnight hike about €40 to €60, and the cathedral roof a few euros.

US dollars are widely accepted, but carry córdobas for street food and buses.

Safety

Safety and scams

Most visitors have no trouble, but bag snatching and petty theft happen, especially at night. Take a taxi after dark.

Only hike volcanoes with an experienced guide; volcanoes such as Telica and Cerro Negro are active and close at times. Foreigners are banned from any political activity in Nicaragua, including joining protests, so avoid demonstrations and do not post about politics while you are there. Drones are banned.

The heat is serious: drink plenty of water. Drink bottled or filtered water; most hostels have refill stations. In an emergency, call 911, or 118 for the police.
