The island's interior

Utuado sits in the Cordillera Central, Puerto Rico's mountain spine, about 1.5 hours from San Juan. It is a working town in karst country, with steep green hills, rivers that disappear into caves, and two reservoirs, Dos Bocas and Caonillas.

The area has deep Taíno roots: the Caguana Indigenous Ceremonial Park has ball courts and carved stones from more than 700 years ago. The Río Tanamá is the place for adventure tours, from tubing through caves to rappelling and river hiking.

Few tourists stay here, and beds are limited to farm stays, cabins and rentals. Give Utuado two days, as a contrast to the coast.
