Colombo
The capital and arrival point. Worth a day for the markets and the seafront.
I would definitely come back! Local people, the kindest people!

An island you can cross in a day, with beaches at both ends, tea mountains in the middle and the most photographed train ride in Asia running between them.
Sri Lanka is the size of Ireland and packs in more than countries ten times larger: surf beaches, tea plantations at 2,000 metres, ancient cities, leopards and elephants, and a train through the hill country that regularly tops lists of the world's best rail journeys.
The circuit most people do runs from Colombo up through the Cultural Triangle — Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa — into the hills at Kandy and Ella, then down to the south coast beaches around Mirissa, Weligama and Hiriketiya. Two weeks covers it without rushing.
The thing to understand before booking is that the island has two monsoons on opposite schedules. The west and south coasts are best from December to March; the east coast around Arugam Bay and Trincomalee is best from May to September. There is no bad time to visit Sri Lanka, only a wrong coast for your dates.
Trains and buses link everything cheaply, and nothing is more than a day away.

The last royal capital, with the Temple of the Tooth and the start of the hill country train.
Tea country at 1,900 metres, colonial bungalows, and the train line that runs through the plantations.
visiting nuwara eliya was one of my favourite days in Sri Lanka. it is much more local tourism than western but we saw a different side to the country which was full of interesting history. it is a bit colder than elsewhere in the country due to being so high but it's a nice change of pace. I recommend dushan's home kitchen as a very delicious dinner - I got the aubergine curry and roti which was perfect.

Hill country: tea plantations, Little Adam's Peak, the Nine Arch Bridge and cool evenings.
Ella was amazing. From the sights to the people and atmosphere everything was great. Highly recommend going there.

A rock fortress rising 200 metres from the plain, and the heart of the Cultural Triangle.
Highlight of our trip

A 2,000-year-old capital of dagobas and sacred trees, cycled between, in the dry northern plain.
This city is the beginning of Srilanka civilisation and had some Unesco world heritage places. A must for culture lovers.

A Dutch fort on a headland, with ramparts to walk at sunset and a walled town of cafés and guesthouses inside.
Galle is an amazing place to visit. 👍 I recommend every traveler to visit Galle.

Whale watching from November to April, a curved beach and a coconut hill at the end of it.
Mirissa is an amazing place. It has it all! Nice beach, great restaurants, and good night life!

A horseshoe bay further east, smaller and more relaxed, and the current favourite.
Hirikitiya is, without a doubt, the best destination in the South of Sri Lanka for me. If what you're looking for is a beach, beautiful landscapes, a peaceful atmosphere, but at the same time meeting people and being in a social environment, this is your place.

Sri Lanka does beaches, hills, wildlife and ruins within a two-week loop.
Two coasts with opposite seasons, and surf for every level.
Hill country walking, rock climbing and safari.
Eight UNESCO sites on one small island.
Rice and curry that arrives as six separate bowls.
Cheap, and the trains cost almost nothing.
The Kandy to Ella train is the one thing everybody does and it deserves it: seven hours through tea plantations and cloud forest, second or third class with the doors open, for about €2. Book reserved seats days ahead if you want one, or take unreserved and stand at the door, which many people prefer.
Sigiriya, a rock fortress with frescoes and water gardens, is best climbed at opening before the heat. Nearby Pidurangala is cheaper, quieter and gives you the view of Sigiriya rather than from it.
The south coast does surf, whales and turtles. Mirissa runs whale-watching from November to April — choose operators that keep distance rather than chase. Yala and Udawalawe have leopards and elephants, and the same caution applies: the ethical operators do not crowd the animals.
Rice and curry is the national meal and it is not one dish: a plate of rice with five or six separate curries — dhal, jackfruit, beetroot, coconut sambol, something fiery — for €2 to €4 at a local place. It is one of the best value meals in Asia.
Hoppers are the breakfast: bowl-shaped fermented pancakes, often with an egg cooked into the middle. String hoppers and pol roti fill the same slot. Kottu, roti chopped on a hot plate with vegetables and egg, is the evening street food and you hear it being made before you see it.
Sri Lankan food is spicier than Indian food in many cases. Ask for less chilli if you want it, and expect the answer to be relative. Ceylon tea is everywhere and costs pennies.
Nightlife is beach bars rather than clubs. The south coast around Weligama, Mirissa and Hiriketiya has sunset bars, surf crowds and occasional beach parties, and it winds down early compared with Thailand.
Colombo has the country's only real club and rooftop scene, and prices there are higher than everywhere else on the island.
Two things to know: alcohol is taxed heavily, so a beer at €2.50 to €4 costs more relative to food than almost anywhere in Asia, and there are dry days on poya, the monthly full moon holiday, when shops do not sell alcohol and some venues close.
Trains are cheap, slow and the best part of travelling here. The hill country line from Kandy through Ella is the famous one; the coastal line south from Colombo runs beside the sea most of the way. Reserved seats book out days ahead in season; unreserved carriages are always available and usually more fun.
Buses go everywhere the trains do not, cost almost nothing and drive enthusiastically.
Tuk-tuks are the local transport and PickMe, the local app, removes the haggling and is much cheaper than negotiating. Many travellers hire a tuk-tuk to drive themselves for the whole trip, which requires a local permit that rental companies arrange.
Sri Lanka is cheap. Dorms start around €8, a rice and curry is €2 to €4, and the seven-hour hill country train costs about €2.
A comfortable day comes to €20 to €35. The costs that add up are safari jeeps at €30 to €50 a vehicle, surf lessons and board hire, and national park entry fees, which are charged in dollars and are significantly higher for foreigners than locals.
The economy went through severe difficulty in 2022 with fuel and power shortages, and while tourism has recovered strongly, prices have moved a lot since — treat any figure written before 2024 with suspicion, including where you find it.
Sri Lanka is safe for travellers and the welcome is warm. Crime against visitors is mostly overcharging and persistent tuk-tuk touts rather than anything worse.
The sea is the genuine hazard. Rip currents on the south and west coasts are strong, lifeguards are limited outside the main surf beaches, and drownings happen every season. Ask locally which beaches are safe for swimming rather than assuming, because it changes by month.
On the roads, buses overtake with commitment and tuk-tuks have no seatbelts. Scooter and tuk-tuk hire needs a local permit for insurance to be valid. Dengue is present year-round, so repellent during the day is worth it.
Most nationalities need an ETA, an electronic travel authorisation applied for online before arrival. The system and its fee have been changed and challenged in court more than once recently, so check the official Sri Lankan immigration site rather than any article — and apply through the government portal, not the lookalike agencies.
Passports need six months' validity from arrival.
At some points Sri Lanka has offered free or waived entry for certain nationalities as a tourism measure, and those schemes come and go, which is another reason to check the official position close to travel.
Two monsoons on opposite coasts mean there is always somewhere good. West and south are best December to March; the east is best May to September.
Average highs for Colombo. The hill country around Ella and Nuwara Eliya is far cooler — bring a jumper — and the two monsoons mean the right coast matters more than the month.
Pick how you travel and how long for. Per night, for one person, in euro equivalents of rupees.
Safari jeeps at €30–50 per vehicle and national park fees charged in dollars sit outside these figures.
One of these is among the most spectacular processions in Asia, and the monthly poya days affect every week of a trip.
