Europe in February: Where to Go When Everyone Else Stays Home

Photo by Mihály Köles on Unsplash

February is the month most of Europe forgets about, and that’s exactly why it’s worth your annual leave. If you’re weighing up the European countries to visit in February, here’s the trade: shorter days and a jumper, in return for quieter streets, shorter museum queues and dorm beds at some of their lowest prices of the year.

2027 has a twist, too. Easter falls on 28 March, so the whole carnival season lands early, as TripProf’s 2027 carnival calendar points out. Venice’s carnival, for example, wraps up on 9 February, and much of the party season is over by mid-month. Plan around it, and you can catch a carnival and still have the rest of February almost to yourself.

Below are 10 picks for hostel travellers, each with what the weather is really like, the 2027 event worth timing your trip around, and a dorm price checked on Hostelworld in October 2026.

Is February a good time to visit Europe?

Yes, if you go in with the right expectations. It’s low season almost everywhere, so beds are cheap, queues are short and locals have their cities back. In 2027 you also get an early carnival season to time a trip around. Our guide to backpacking Europe in winter covers the whole season if you’re flexible.

Here’s the honest trade-off:

  • The good: low-season dorm prices, quiet museums and old towns, and carnivals in Cádiz, Madeira, Malta, Venice and Nice.
  • The not so good: short days, rain in the south, proper cold in central Europe, and some seasonal hostels and island services close until spring.
  • The exception: Venice. Beds there get pricier during carnival, so book early or go after it ends.

The 10 picks at a glance:

  • Sun: Lisbon, Seville, Madeira (carnival 3 to 14 Feb), Malta (carnival about 4 to 10 Feb).
  • Carnival: Cádiz (4 to 14 Feb), Venice (ends 9 Feb), Nice (9 to 28 Feb).
  • Cities: Athens, Budapest and Kraków, the cheapest beds on the list.

And here’s the cheapest dorm we found in each:

About these prices: they’re “from” prices checked on Hostelworld in October 2026. February rates may differ, especially on carnival dates, so check your own dates before you book.

Lisbon: the easiest February win

If you only pick one place from this list, make it Lisbon. It’s milder than most European capitals in February, so rain, not cold, is the thing to plan for. Bring a light waterproof and you’ll have the viewpoints, tiled lanes and riverside walks largely to yourself.

It’s also one of the easiest cities to do on a hostel budget. Lisbon has 80 hostels on Hostelworld, with dorms from €10. The top-rated Yes! Lisbon Hostel scores 9.7, with dorms from €20, and Lisbon Destination scores 9.2, from €12.18 (all checked October 2026). Lisbon’s hostels are known for family dinners and walking tours, so they stay social even in low season.

Tip: save the rainy afternoons for a museum or a long lunch, and head to the miradouros when the sun breaks through. For more, see our Lisbon travel guide, and check the Lisbon events page for what’s on while you’re there.

Seville and Cádiz: winter sun with a carnival chaser

Seville is one of the warmest big cities in Europe in February, with average highs of about 17°C, according to Holiday Weather. That’s coffee-on-a-terrace weather while most of the continent is in a coat. Seville has 41 hostels on Hostelworld, with dorms from €11, and the well-rated U-Sense For You scores 8.9, with dorms from €15 (checked October 2026). Our Seville travel guide fills the days.

Then chase the carnival down the coast. Cádiz throws Spain’s most famous street carnival, all fancy dress and satirical singing groups called chirigotas. In 2027, the street party runs 4 to 14 February, and the grand final of the official song contest (the COAC) is on 5 February, according to Planomato. The catch: Cádiz has only 6 properties on Hostelworld, with dorms from €16. Casa Caracol scores 9.7, with dorms from €19.29 (checked October 2026), and beds go fast for carnival.

How to do both on one trip:

  • Book Cádiz first. It’s the scarce bit, so lock in a bed for your carnival nights before anything else.
  • Base yourself in Seville for the rest of the trip, where there’s far more choice.
  • Take the train between them. It takes about 1 hour 30 minutes, per Trainline, with regional fares from about €16.65 one way. Check times and fares on Renfe.
  • Time it right. Aim to be in Cádiz for the first weekend, 5 to 7 February 2027, to catch the final and the street parties.

Madeira: spring weather and a carnival in early February

If you want the safest bet for mild weather, this Portuguese island in the Atlantic is it. Funchal’s average February high is about 19°C, based on IPMA climate normals listed by Current Results, which makes it ideal for hiking the levadas, the old irrigation channels that wind along the cliffs and through laurel forest. Then there’s the carnival. In 2027, downtown Funchal celebrates from 3 to 14 February, with the big Allegoric Parade on 5 and 6 February and the anything-goes Slapstick Parade on 9 February, according to the official Visit Madeira calendar, which notes dates can still change. Our Portugal travel guides cover the mainland too.

Book early: few hostels. Funchal has only a handful of hostels on Hostelworld, and carnival week is the busiest time of the winter. Lock in your bed as soon as your flights are booked, and check live prices on the cards below.

Malta: mild, compact and carnival in Valletta

Malta is the easy option: English is an official language, the island is small enough to get around by bus, and you can be at a harbour viewpoint an hour after landing.

  • Carnival: Malta Carnival 2027 is listed for 5 to 10 February, ending on Ash Wednesday, with the main events in Valletta and smaller ones in Nadur on Gozo, according to Carnifest. Those dates aren’t official yet, so check before you book. Read up on the capital of Malta before you go.
  • Where to stay: most hostels are in Sliema and St Julian’s, a short bus or ferry ride from Valletta.
  • Make it a bigger trip: Sicily is a ferry ride away, and our Sicily and Malta itinerary shows how to link them.

Hostels are spread across several towns, so compare them all before you book.

Athens: ancient sites without the summer crush

February is when Athens gives the Acropolis back to you. There are no summer queues snaking down the hill and no midday heat, and you’ve got time to wander the Ancient Agora and Plaka between showers.

  • The ticket: a standard adult Acropolis ticket is €30, with no winter discount, according to Athens Walking Tours (checked October 2026). Buy it on the official ticket site rather than from resellers.
  • Or go for free: state-run sites, the Acropolis included, are free on the first and third Sundays from November to March. In February 2027 that’s 7 and 21 February, per the same guide. Arrive at opening, as free days get busy, and note that the Acropolis Museum isn’t part of the scheme.
  • Make a few days of it: our Athens city guide fills the evenings, and these day trips from Athens take you to the coast and beyond.

Budapest: is it too cold in February? Not if you’re in a thermal bath

Budapest in February is cold, often below freezing, and that’s exactly why it works. The city’s outdoor thermal pools steam in the winter air, and sinking into 30-something-degree water while snow sits on the statues around you is one of Europe’s great cheap thrills.

The bath: a weekday locker ticket at Széchenyi is about 13,200 HUF (about €36), and about 14,800 HUF at weekends, according to Hungary Unlocked’s 2026 price comparison (euro figures at about 363 HUF to €1, September 2026). Prices are third-party, so check the official site before you go.

After dark: the ruin bars and hostel bar nights keep the social scene going all winter, so you won’t be drinking alone. Check the Budapest Events page for concerts and parties while you’re in town, and browse our Hungary travel guides for ideas beyond the capital.

Kraków: Europe’s cheapest dorm beds in a snow-dusted old town

If the budget is tight after Christmas, Kraków stretches it furthest. Dorm beds here are among the cheapest in Europe (the cards below show live prices), and February snow on the Main Market Square looks like a postcard. It’s cold, though, so plan your days around warm places:

  • Fill up at a milk bar. These old-school canteens serve pierogi and soup for pocket money, with meals from about 15 PLN, according to Hello Cracow (checked October 2026).
  • Spend the afternoon indoors. Oskar Schindler’s Enamel Factory museum, run by the Museum of Kraków, is a powerful few hours out of the cold. Our things to do in Kraków has more ideas.
  • Save money outdoors. Wrap up and walk the Old Town, Wawel Hill and Kazimierz, all of them free. Our free things to do in Kraków covers them all.
  • Head underground at night. The city’s cellar bars are cosy, cheap and full of other travellers, especially if your hostel runs a bar crawl.

Venice: carnival ends 9 February 2027, so go early or go after

Venice in February is the city at its most theatrical, and its most expensive. The official carnival site lists Carnevale di Venezia 2027 from 23 January to 9 February, and for those two and a half weeks masks fill St Mark’s Square and beds in the historic centre get scarce and pricey.

You’ve got two smart ways to play it:

  • Go for carnival, sleep in Mestre. The mainland side is a short train or bus ride across the lagoon and usually much cheaper than the islands, so you get the parades without the centro storico price tag.
  • Go after 9 February. Once the masks are packed away, the crowds thin out and prices tend to drop, leaving you quiet canals for the rest of the month.

Either way, pack waterproof shoes. Winter is acqua alta (high tide) season, and the city council posts high-water forecasts so you can plan around a flooded morning. Check our Venice travel guides for what to do once you’re there, and the Venice events page for what’s on during your dates.

Carnival tip: book carnival beds now. They’re the first to go, and prices climb the closer you get to the big weekends.

Nice and Menton: where does carnival run all month?

Missed the early carnivals? The Côte d’Azur saves its biggest party for the second half of February. Nice’s tourist office lists Carnaval de Nice 2027, themed Vive l’Amour, from 9 to 28 February 2027, with parades and flower battles around Place Masséna.

Down the coast, Menton’s Fête du Citron runs 13 to 28 February 2027. Its giant sculptures made from lemons and oranges draw more than 200,000 visitors a year, according to the regional tourism board, and the Golden Fruit parades are expected on Sundays 14, 21 and 28 February. Ticket prices for 2027 hadn’t been published when we checked in October 2026.

The budget move is to sleep in Nice, which has far more hostel beds, and ride the regional train along the coast to Menton for the day. The organisers recommend public transport anyway. Our Nice city guide covers the rest of your stay, and these day trips from Nice are easy to add on the quieter weekdays.

Will hostels be quiet in February, and how do you still meet people?

Some will be. February is low season in most of Europe, so a hostel that’s buzzing in July might have a half-empty common room. The fix starts before you book: pick hostels with high ratings for atmosphere and a bar or regular events, and read recent reviews for mentions of family dinners or walking tours.

Then let the app do the rest:

  • Hostel Chats and City Chats. The Hostelworld app puts you in a chat with people at your hostel, and City Chats widen it to travellers staying anywhere in town. Handy when your dorm is quiet but the city isn’t.
  • Linkups. Hostels and backpackers set up Linkups like walking tours, bar crawls and group dinners. You can join from 14 days before check-in.
  • Social Pass. Haven’t booked yet? Social Pass lets you chat and join community events without a booking, for a week, a month, three months or a year.

For the bigger picture, the Events pages list what’s on in each city, from carnivals to concerts. They’re separate from Linkups, which are meet-ups travellers and hostels organise themselves. Travelling solo for the first time? Our guide to the safest countries for solo female travellers is worth a read too.

What should you pack for Europe in February?

February can mean 18°C in Madeira and snow in Kraków on the same trip, so pack for range, not bulk.

  • Layers, not one heavy coat. A thermal base layer, a warm mid-layer and a light down jacket handle cold mornings and mild afternoons, and squash into a carry-on.
  • A packable rain jacket. Lisbon, Venice and the Riviera all get winter showers.
  • Waterproof shoes. For slushy cobbles in Kraków and the odd acqua alta morning in Venice.
  • Swimwear and flip-flops. You’ll want them for Budapest’s thermal baths.
  • A padlock and a quick-dry towel. Most hostels have lockers, and not all include towels.
  • A hat, gloves and a scarf. Small, light, and the difference between enjoying a carnival parade and leaving early.

Travelling carry-on only? Roll your clothes, wear your bulkiest layer on the plane and leave space for market finds.

Conclusion: so, where should you go in Europe in February?

It depends what you’re after. The best European countries to visit in February all reward the traveller who goes while everyone else stays home:

  • For sun: Lisbon, Seville, Madeira or Malta, where mild days make the low-season prices even sweeter.
  • For carnival: Cádiz, Venice or Nice and Menton, so pick your dates and book early.
  • For the tightest budget: Kraków or Budapest, with cheap beds and a thermal bath to thaw out in.

Whichever you choose, compare beds before you book and download the app so you’ve got company from the day you arrive.
