Amsterdam is world-famous for its “coffee shops” that offer more than just a cup of coffee, but in recent years there’s been an explosion of amazing places to get high on good old-fashioned caffeine. Read on for your ultimate guide to coffee in Amsterdam.
1. Caffènation Amsterdam
Well-known Belgian roaster Caffènation recently opened its first store outside of its home country. It’s located in a part of town that is often referred to as the Belgian Quarter and there’s a lovely park opposite, where you can enjoy your flat white to go.
2. Headfirst Coffee Roasters
Home to the reigning Dutch Barista Champion Lex Wenneker and partner Jonatan Scheeper, these guys roast some truly fine coffees and serve them in a relaxed and friendly setting.
3. Lot Sixty One Coffee Roasters
Oud West’s prime coffee spot roasts in-house and also hosts public cuppings, where you get a chance to sample some of its most recent coffees. The sunny benches out front are perfect for people watching while enjoying some of the best coffee in Amsterdam.
One of the first specialty coffee shops in Amsterdam, Trakteren is a relaxed spot in Oud West that offers a great variety of coffees alongside a selection of loose leaf teas and hand-crafted chocolates.
5. White Label Coffee Roasters
Run by an adorable coffee-obsessed duo, White Label hosts regular events such as book readings and gigs and is home to the current Dutch Aeropress champion Floris van der Burg.
6. Sweet Cup
An island of calm in one of Amsterdam’s most touristy spots, Sweet Cup roasts its own coffees on site and offers delicious home-baked cakes.
7. Scandinavian Embassy
One of the city’s most innovative concepts, Scandinavian Embassy is run by an Argentinean Barista, a Swedish chef and a Polish designer. Together they offer a quality coffee and food experience that is not to be missed.
8. Back to Black
Right near the famous Rijksmuseum, Back to Black is one of the nicest spots in town and offers a great selection of coffees from local roasters. There’s a large communal table for making friends and window-facing seats for those who just want to switch off and relax with a book.
9. Koko Coffee & Design
Slap bang in the heart of the Red Light District, Koko combines great coffee with hand-selected fashion and design. Koko gets its coffees custom roasted by Caffènation (see above) and offers a nice refuge from the bustle outside.
Possibly the very first specialty coffee shop in the city, Espressofabriek opened its doors more than 10 years ago. The café is surrounded by the lovely Westerpark, and close to a huge number of markets, festivals and events.
11. Rum Baba
Owned by one of the co-owners of Coffee Bru (above), Rum Baba is a beautiful coffee spot in the heart of Amsterdam East that also doubles as the HQ of local tea brand Monkey Chief. They bake some of the city’s best cakes and cookies.
12. Coffee Bru
Cheerful and friendly, Coffee Bru was one of the first great coffee spots in Amsterdam East and has built up a cult following over the years. Expect great coffee, tea and yummy cakes.
13. Stooker Roasting Co.
This is not a café in the traditional sense because it’s not open to the public during the week, but on Saturday’s Stooker Roasting Co. does public cuppings and offers workshops in its gorgeous roastery. So, if you happen to be in town for the weekend, swing by and try some of their expertly-roasted coffees.
14. Coffee Company Roastery
Run by the people behind one of the country’s largest coffee chains, this particular outlet is a mixture of café and concept store. Here the focus is on sourcing, roasting and brewing truly special coffees, which can be enjoyed on their wonderful terrace overlooking the famous windmill brewery and canals.
15. The Coffee Virus
Hidden away in Amsterdam Noord and mostly frequented by people who work in the A-Lab co-working space and their guests, The Coffee Virus is a great spot for anyone who is in search of excellent coffee, delicious food and the occasional coffee-delivery drone.
